Chapter 9

The Feelings of a Certain Lady of the Marquis House

*Lizbeth Fahlcrantz POV*

“…….And that’s all for the report.”

3 days after the meeting with Prince Rudolf, my servant Maya was bowing in front of me after having given her full report.

“So……..So then what kind of opinion did Prince Rudolf have of me after our meeting? Did he perchance, say anything afterwards?”

“………..Well, he did talk about you technically, or rather, he continued to stare at the letter of your acceptance of the engagement with his neck perpetually at an inclined angle.”

“??”

What, was that supposed to even mean……?

Was he happy about our engagement? Or was he disappointed? I couldn’t come to a conclusion.

“From my perspective, I believe he still feels you to be too distant from him. After all, Lady Lizbeth, you decided to act like that in front of him after all……”

“!?! W-well, that simply couldn’t be helped, okay!?”

Against Maya who showed her clear disdain towards my actions without showing a single change in expression, I ended up raising my voice involuntarily.

But it really was true! She doesn’t even understand just how excited I was to finally meet Prince Rudolf again……..

Ever since that day back when we met as mere children, I never stopped thinking about him. And so it was only natural that I would end up acting awkward and stiffen up from nervousness, right?

“Then, please listen to me clearly, okay? If things stay like this, prince Rudolf is bound to misunderstand things completely.”

“Th-that would not be ideal! Finally, after 9 years, I have finally been able to reunite with again after all!?”

Yes……..I have known Prince Rudolf since we were only 5 years old.

That day, Prince Rudolf was so adorable, sweet, yet also chivalrous…….his straightforward amber coloured eyes that looked directly into my own, and his oh so gentle voice that could melt both body and soul, made me more happy than anything else in life.

“Haah……..Prince Rudolf……..”

“……If you love him that much, then can you please at least try to act a bit more amiable when you’re actually with him as well? As he is right now, if he sees you like this, I’m sure he’ll quickly forget the misunderstandings in his mind and will surely come to deeply love you as well Lady Lizbeth.”

Just when I finally recalled the image of Prince Rudolf from that day, Maya just had to bring me back to reality and ruin it for me.

In the first place, Maya is my maid-cum-personal guard, and yet she really shows no tact, or rather, it really doesn’t feel like she treats me like a servant should treat her master sometimes……..

Well, at this point, after all this time, it doesn’t really bother me that much though……….

“………All that aside, it really was as you told me Maya. The child from my past really was Prince Rudolf after all.”

“Indeed.”

Both me and Maya nodded to each other.

I recalled the gold coin that Prince Rudolf accidentally dropped on the floor.

That was no doubt the very same gold coin that I gave to him on that day.

Fufu,……even now, remembering that innocent and pure smile he showed me when I showed him that coin, I feel blessed. It was perfection. It was the absolute best. Perfection incarnate.

“………Lady Lizbeth, you seem to be making quite the slovenly expression again it seems?”

“Eeh!?”

Hearing Maya point it out, I quickly covered my face with my hands out of embarrassment.

T-this is bad. Whenever I start thinking about Prince Rudolf, I lose all control over my expression for some reason.

Even though I am a proud daughter of the great Fahlcrantz family, the very symbol of this Empire’s military might.

“*cough*……..anyway, it seems it really was the right decision to have you infiltrate the Imperial Palace, Maya.”

In the first place, Maya had been sent into the palace three months ago with two missions. To observe and monitor the infamous Prince Rudolf, as well as search for the person that I truly loved.

There were other servants from our Fahlcrantz family that had already infiltrated the place at the behest of my father but, since that incident happened, I also sent Maya, a person who I trusted the most, on my own personal request as well.

Soon after Maya entered the palace, the poison assassination attempt happened, and while the culprits had been found and executed, it was very obvious that the real culprits were still at large.

To quickly put a lid on this incident, the Imperial household must have quickly done all this and covered the truth up.

Which means, the real culprit was someone that high up and influential that they couldn’t be punished publicly.

That’s why, although it was only after the assassination attempt that I finally got to see Prince Rudolf’s true appearance………fufu, as you’d expect, you simply cannot just believe ever rumour that come to your ear.

The Prince Rudolf I met personally was, a little jokey and occasionally put on some airs, but other than that, he always talked with me with the utmost sincerity.

And above all…….his amber eyes, were as warm as they were on that day.

However.

“……….to think Prince Rudolf was able to endure that kind of horrible treatment for so long without ever warping because of it..……”

During their meeting, I got to hear the stories from Prince Rudolf’s past.

It was so utterly absurd, unreasonable, irrational, and so devoid of any grace, that I was filled with so much rage that I wanted to instantly find all those people and deliver judgement upon their sins.

Even if those people were high ranking nobles, I would not care.

And also……..I am no longer the little girl I was on that day.

“Maya, is Prince Rudolf still being made to suffer the same kind of painful treatment even now?”

“No. I already reported it as such but, ever since the incident with Mrs Tapple and the Chamberlain, there are no more people who would dare disrespect Prince Rudolf to his face. And besides, the ones that would have done so have been already removed from the palace under my authority as his personal attendant.

She put her hand on her chest and spoke so with pride in her voice.

Especially, the way she emphasized the words personal attendant really irritated me a little.

I-I too would like to be someone special to Prince Rudolf as well.

“Maya, do continue to support and assist Prince Rudolf like this with all your ability understand?”

“As you wish my lady. I, Maya Brant, swear it on my life.”

Maya bowed in a dignified manner once again.

“By the way……..what should we do with that person?

“What else? They tried to play games with me of all people. We will show them what it means to turn the Fahlcrantz family into your enemy.”

“Understood.”

Maya gave a smirk and then disappeared into the shadows.

But still, it’s incredible how a mere ducal family can get this cocky just because they have some royal blood flowing in their veins.

I imagine they are simply desperate to have the backing of the Fahlcrantz family but, this simply won’t be do.

After all, my very being exists solely for Prince Rudolf’s sake, and him alone.

Once again, thinking and recalling his face, I couldn’t help but break into a smile.
