Chapter 2 – Circus
Part 1
Then Luna, who had been brought to the castle, captivated the maids one by one.
“Wow, that gatekeeper! How could he turn away such a pretty girl at the gate like that!”
“Ugh, I feel so lonely without Luna-san…”
Lexia and Tito, who had been turned away by the gatekeeper, wandered around the royal capital.
Lexia looks up at the castle, her eyes burning with determination.
“Alone in the castle, where mysterious conspiracies swirl around… Luna must be so lonely right now! I’ll do whatever it takes to get into the castle and rescue her!”
“Oh, Lexia-san! This alley looks like it might lead to the side of the castle!”
“Great work, Tito! Let’s find a way to get in right away!”
The two of them dashed into a narrow alley, searching for a possible entrance.
But…
“Where are we? I can see the castle, but we can’t get anywhere near it!”
“Awawa, we relied on Luna-san to read the map for us so far…!”
The two of them wandered back and forth in the deserted alley.
Perhaps because there are ancient ruins left in the royal capital, the streets are very complicated, and that is why they got lost.

“I’m sure it is. This must be a cursed labyrinth that uses the technology of an ancient civilization! We’re doomed to be stuck here forever…!”

“Huh, you guys are…”
“Huh?”
“T-this voice is…?”
They turned around and saw a familiar voice.
Standing in front of them was the adventurer they had met in the border town──Selene.
“Se-Selene? / Selene-san?”
The two looked at each other in surprise, and behind the hood, Selene smiled.
“Hello, nice to see you again.”
“Awawawa, Selene-san〜〜!”
“Whoa! W-what’s wrong?”
Serene quickly caught Tito, who had run up to give her a big hug.
“I thought I was going to dry up and die!”
“D-dried up?!”
“I never thought I’d see you again so soon! I’m so happy to see you!”
“Me too. But what are you doing here?”
Lexia looked up at the castle that could be seen in the distance beyond the wall.
“We got lost. We want to get into the castle somehow…”
“The castle? Why on earth?”
“To see Luna!”
Tito, who had regained her energy and was standing upright, added to Lexia’s story.
“Well… it seems that Luna-san is the princess of this country, and she was taken to the castle.”
“Eh? N-no way…!”
Selene’s eyes widened, and she thought.
“Oh, no, that’s right… So that’s what happened…”
Lexia looked at her serious profile.
“Selene, do you know anything about it?”
After thinking for a moment, Selene nodded her head as if she had made up her mind and looked up.
She looked directly at Lexia and Tito and pulled back the hood that had covered her face.
Then her silky silver hair, well-proportioned face, and kind, light blue eyes came into view.
Her refined features were exactly like Luna’s.
“Eh? Selene’s face… it’s just like Luna’s!?”
“Eeehhhh? H-how could that be…?”
Lexia was surprised, but then she clapped her hands as if she remembered something.
“Oh, come to think of it, when we first met, I thought you looked a little like Luna! But I only saw you for a split second!”
“Yeah. I was surprised when I first met Luna-san, too.”
Selene laughed at the two surprised girls and brushed her hair back from her hood.
Then, she introduced herself with a clear voice.
“I am the real princess. I am Diana of the Kingdom of Rastel.”
“”Eh-eeeeeeeeeehhhhhhh?!””
Lexia and Tito jumped to their feet at the shocking declaration.
“Se-Se-Se-Selene-san, you’re the real Princess Diana?”
“What does that mean?!”
“I’m sorry to have kept it from you, but the name ‘Selene’ is a false name used to deceive the enemy. My real name is Diana, and I am the true, legitimate princess of this country.”
“To deceive the eyes of the enemy…?
Then Selene clenched her fists and opened her mouth as if to force a word out.
“It seems that the official story is that I was kidnapped by bandits, but that is not the case. When I was young, I was thrown into the Valley of Storms, which is infested with violent monsters──by the hands of the king’s younger brother, Douglas.”
Lexia and Tito turned pale.
“S-so, that’s what happened…!”
“Douglas is the bearded man who greeted Luna! I thought he must be a bad guy because he separated Luna from us, but to leave young Selene in a cave of monsters, he’s an outrageous villain!”
“Yes… even now, I can still see the look on his face when he threw me into the valley.”
Selene lowers her eyes as if to contemplate her past.
“But you’re safe, aren’t you?”
“Yes. Fortunately, an adventurer who came to collect rare plants picked me up and raised me. She’s a mage called the ‘Witch of the Scorched Earth.'”
Lexia rolled her eyes.
“The Witch of the Scorched Earth is a very famous adventurer!”
“Lexia-san, do you know her?”
“Yes. She’s a mage who specializes in using fire-based magic, and when she was attacked by a horde of monsters, she accidentally burned the whole area to the ground, you know!”
“That’s scary!”
Tito’s tail twitched, and Selene laughed ironically.
“That’s right. She was a terribly scary person and quite eccentric, but her magic skills were outstanding, and she taught me magic as well. …She was a bit of a strict master, though. I disguised myself as an adventurer so that Douglas wouldn’t find me, and I waited for an opportunity to return to the castle while traveling with the Witch of the Scorched Earth. But the other day, I heard that my father, King Farouk, had disappeared from public view, and I was afraid that something bad might have happened, so I decided to return to the castle.”
Lexia tilted her head.
“His Majesty Farouk has stopped appearing…?”
“Yes. I’ve heard that he’s been busy with his work at the castle, but it’s strange that my father, who was so concerned about his people that he even made frequent trips to inspect the towns in the countryside, has suddenly stopped showing up. I suspect Douglas is up to something.”
Selene pressed her chest in pain.
“Even after losing his beloved wife, my mother, my father raised me with great care. I had heard a rumor that even now, he lives in deep mourning while ruling the kingdom of Rastel as a good king after my disappearance as a young child.”
A shadow of pain passes over her strong-willed profile.
“As I traveled, trying to escape Douglas’ gaze, I felt as if my heart were being torn as I thought of my father’s feelings. At the same time, I heard a rumor that my father had disappeared and that the whole country was searching for me. There was no doubt that something was happening at the castle. I thought that Douglas must have started making plans and moving around… With that in mind, I returned to the Kingdom of Rastel for the first time in a long time since the day I was thrown into the Valley of Storms.
“Oh, so that’s why you’re in this maze…!”
“Yes, to scout the castle.”
“S-so that’s what happened…!”
Tito muttered as the truth was revealed one by one.
Lexia tilted her head sideways.
“Speaking of which, what’s the Witch of the Scorched Earth doing now?”
“Oh, she’s off on her own adventures, leaving me alone since she finished raising me. Knowing her, she’s probably doing well.”

Tito muttered in a daze, lowering her cat ears.
“But… then Luna-san wasn’t a real princess, was she?”
Lexia sat up at these words.
“That’s right! Douglas already thinks there are no princesses left… and yet he invited Luna, who looks exactly like the princess, to the castle. He must be planning to use her for something bad! Luna is in danger; we must hurry and save her!”
“Yes, when I saw Luna-san, I thought we looked alike, but I never thought it would come to this… I’m sorry for dragging you into this. I will definitely save Luna-san, so you guys wait somewhere safe until then…”
But Lexia shook her head.
“We can’t just wait. Luna is an important member of our group. We’re going to storm the castle with Selene!”
“But I can’t let you risk your lives…”
Selene was worried about Lexia and Tito and was at a loss.
But Lexia shook her blonde hair and smiled fearlessly.
“Don’t worry. We’ve been through tough times before! Like when we defeated the legendary Chimera in the Sahar Kingdom or when we fought the ice spirits in the Romel Empire!”
“Wha!? N-no way…! Is that true?”
“It’s true! We also defeated one of the Seven Deadly Sins and stopped a volcanic eruption that threatened to swallow the world!”

Selene’s eyes widened in amazement.
“I have heard rumors of an incredible hero who has been saving countries and the world one by one, but could it be you? But for three girls to accomplish a feat that even the most talented army could not match… and to have a collection of legendary items… who in the world are you…?”
Lexia shot a sideways glance at the stunned Selene.
“As a matter of fact, I’m the Princess of the Kingdom of Arcelia!”
“W-what did you say?”
“Oh, come to think of it, Selene and I are fellow princesses. Nice to meet you!”
“Um, yes, nice to meet you too… N-no, but why is a princess traveling without even her royal guard?”
“To save the world! We are on a journey to help people in need!”
