Part 2

After hearing Lexia’s proud declaration, Selene steps back, looking dizzy.

“A princess, and only the three of you? How have you managed to stay safe so far? But how did you defeat the Chimera of the Kingdom of Sahar and one of the Seven Deadly Sins…”

Then Lexia proudly shrugs her shoulders.

“Fufufu, we have nothing to fear. After all, Tito is a disciple of the Claw Saint!”

“The Claw Saint!? I-is that the Holy who appears in fairy tales?”

Tito wagged her tail at Selene’s shocked look.

“Yes!”

“A-a cute beast girl like this is a disciple of the Holy, who is said to be one of the strongest in the world?”

“Ehehe, this makes me so embarrassed.”

Selene stared at the embarrassed Tito, who blushed as she twitched her cat ears.

Then Lexia added to the pressure.

“Besides, Luna is the assassin known as the Headhunter!”

“The Headhunter! Wait, I can’t keep up with all this…!”

Selene pressed her forehead.

“I’ve heard rumors about the Headhunter before… this Headhunter who was said to have the power of a god, who could accomplish even the most difficult missions, even get past the tight security that wouldn’t let even a single insect through…!”

“That’s right, that Headhunter! But Luna failed the first time she tried to assassinate me, and she’s been my bodyguard ever since!”

“What do you mean? Are you saying that you’re letting the assassin who tried to kill you be your bodyguard?”

“That’s right!”

“Why?”

“Because she’s really strong and really cute!”

Selene finally loses her mind when she sees Lexia proudly puffing out her chest.

“Ugh… A princess goes on a journey to save the world, and the former skilled assassin who failed in her assassination attempt on the princess now serves as her bodyguard. And what’s more, her companion is the disciple of the Claw Saint, one of the strongest in the world, and they save several countries and the world with only three people…”

“Ara, Selene has stopped moving. Are you okay?”

“W-was there too much information…?”

Tito calls Selene, who is in a state of confusion, to calm her down.

“Um, so don’t worry, we can fight too! Leave Selene-san’s protection to us!”

“Y-yeah… no, that’s not necessary.”

Selene finally came to her senses.

She touched the old sword at her hip.

“I have the skills to fight as well. I taught myself swordsmanship in preparation for the day I would fight Douglas. And combining that with the magic I learned from the Scorched Earth Witch, I created my own style of swordsmanship──magic sword. I’ve even used this sword to defeat a mithril boar.”

“Huh? Even experienced adventurers can’t even scratch the mithril boar!”

“That’s amazing to have come up with such a great technique all by yourself!”

Selene blushed and held out her slender hand.

“But to be honest, I wasn’t confident enough to do it on my own. I would really appreciate it if you could lend me your strength.”

“Of course! I look forward to working with you, Selene!”

“I look forward to working with you!”

The three shook hands firmly.

Lexia looked up at the castle, which she could see through the wall.

“Now that we know Douglas is up to something, I want to hurry and save Luna, but the problem is how to get into the castle. We also can’t reveal Selene’s true identity.”

“That’s right. I still want to keep my true identity a secret in order to expose Douglas’ plot. Most of all, I don’t know what kind of drastic measures Douglas will take once he finds out about my existence.”

“Hmm… is there any way to infiltrate the castle without causing a big commotion?”

Tito lowered her cat ears as she followed Lexia’s gaze, which was fixed on the castle.

“That castle looks really solid, even from a distance…”

“Yes, this castle was built by rebuilding the ruins of an ancient civilization. I looked at the outside, and it’s quite solid, and there’s a good chance that it has a defense mechanism that uses the technology of the ancient civilization. It’s too dangerous to break in illegally.”

“A defense mechanism…? Then it looks like sneaking in will be difficult…”

Tito was discouraged, but Lexia put her hands on her hips and spoke fearlessly.

“Then there’s only one way! We’ll have to go through the castle gate, fair and square!”

“Eh? But won’t we be turned away again…”

“Don’t worry, we’ll find a way to get in! Or we could try to sneak in like we did in the Romel Empire! Anyway, there’s no point in just sitting here. First, let’s get out of this maze and gather some information in the city!”

“I agree.”

And so the three of them set out to go to the city, but…

“We can’t get out!?”

The group was stuck again.

No matter how far they went, they always ended up at the same intersection.

“No matter which way we go, we always end up back here! Is this really the curse of the ancient civilization?”

“Awawa, are we all going to starve to death?

Just as they were about to give up, Selene touched the wall.

“Could this be…”

“! Selene, did you notice something?”

“Yes. It looks like this wall is moving.”

“What?!”

“I marked the wall with chalk just in case, but it’s clearly moving. It’s probably some kind of technology from the ancient civilization, a trap to catch people who approach the castle illegally forever.”

“Ancient civilization is amazing, isn’t it?”

“But wouldn’t it trap people from the city who accidentally entered it?”

“I think it’s designed to quickly lead people who accidentally wander in out and to trap people who approach the castle with the clear intention of entering and lead them into the depths.”

“What amazing technology! I want to introduce it to the Kingdom of Arcelia as well because it could be used to trap my father and Owen!”

“You want to use the technology of an ancient civilization to throw off your father?”

“Awawa, how are we going to get out of such an incredible maze…”

Tito looked around in a panic, then suddenly looked up.

“Oh, right, if we climb up the wall…”

“Wait a minute.”

Selene stopped Tito, picked up a stone, and threw it up the wall.

Then…

Whoom! Bang!

A beam of light shot from the top of the wall, and the stone vaporized instantly.

“”Eh, eeeeeeeeeehhhhh?!””

Lexia and Tito yelled involuntarily.

“I see. So if you die of starvation in the maze, that’s fine, but if you force your way out, you’ll be dealt with.”

“How wicked!”

“Awawa, I almost got burned to death!”

Next to the two who had turned pale, Selene drew her sword.

“It’s impossible to escape from above… but fortunately, the strength of the wall itself doesn’t seem to be that great. It’s a little forceful, but shall we try to break through?”

“Eh? What are you going to──”

Selene held her hand over the sword.

Then, a red pattern appeared on the steel blade, and the blade itself burst into flames.

“Awawa, the sword is engulfed in flames…?”

“W-what in the world is this…?”

“This is the magic sword. Stand back a little. …The city is this way.”

Selene swung the flaming sword at the wall.

And then…

“Fire Slash!”

Selene swung the sword sharply.

A flaming slash was unleashed, cutting through the many layers of the wall.

BOOM! Rumble, rumble, rumble!

“Ee… eeeeeeeeeeeeh?!”

“A-amazing…!”

Lexia and Tito rolled their eyes as they saw the cut marks leading to the exit.

Selene held the burning sword up to the sun.

“This sword is a special sword that uses technology from the Nayuta Empire era and can be imbued with magical attributes. It was a dubious souvenir that the witch bought at a bargain price a long time ago, but it seems to be a genuine relic. Thanks to it, I can unleash magic as a slashing attack without having to cast a spell.”

When Selene waved the sword, the flames covering the blade disappeared.

“A-amazing, Selene, I had no idea you were so strong!”

“That magic sword was really cool!”

“Fufu. Thank you. Hearing you say that makes all the training worthwhile.”

Lexia was moved to tears as she walked through the hole that had been cut out.

“We did it! Now we can get out of this cursed maze!”

“Fuwaahh, I thought we were doomed…! But still, a moving maze is an amazing technology!”

“That’s true, but why did the Nayuta Empire, which had such advanced technology, fall?”

Selene also tilted her head in response to Lexia’s question.

“That is still a mystery. It seems that the destruction was really sudden, and the few documents that remain only say that ‘everything was lost in a single night due to a mysterious catastrophe.'”

“Is it possible for a great nation to be destroyed in a single night?”

“Well, that’s just a story or a legend. I think it’s greatly exaggerated.”

As they talked, the three of them went through the hole in the wall and headed for the exit of the maze.
