Chapter 551: Stubborness towards stolen gifts?
Lillian’s original plan before the kidnapping was to take advantage of Kuro’s injured state. Besides just his arm, he had suffered a much graver wound inside the game as he had faced the Obsidian Warden by himself, only being able to stall until the guards arrived.
If he had been left with grave injuries, that would’ve taken more than just potions to heal; Lillian could’ve substituted him, taking over his position as the attendant for the Scion of Kirisaya.
But unfortunately, it seemed Fate had something else in store for her as she was dragged down along with him.
She could only sigh; there wasn’t any point in getting upset about it now. After all...
’There’s no use in crying over spilt milk... I’ll think of some other way to get into the event.’
But now, she was in another mess. She was stuck in a car with the Gardener of Roses for no reason.
Slightly unnerved and anxious, Lillian decided to remove the awkward silence by pulling out a handful of spatial rings - those that were used to hold the items displayed on auction.
She was planning to gift some of them to the Gardener.
Unfortunately, he didn’t accept them for one simple reason.
"Look! I didn’t steal them, alright? These rings just holds the items that were seen in the auction!" Lillian exclaimed, frustrated as she stared at the stubborn Gardener.
"And yet, they’re in your hands, not having been paid for." The Gardener snapped back, folding his arms, "I may be an assassin with infamous reputation, but I am no pathetic thief."
Lillian gave an exasperated sigh, rubbing the back of her head. Perhaps it wasn’t a good idea to give them the rings; she had even warned herself that she shouldn’t do something like this in front of him.
"Look, it’s not really stealing if they belonged to you, right?"
"What are you implying?"
Holding up a ring, pinched between her fingers, she waved it.
"Inside this one is the [Mystical Golden Bough], which you won fair and square. All that I managed to take from the underground warehouse before it was destroyed were the items you so happened to win. If you believe it is stealing, you can just forward your payment to the academy afterwards."
Lillian lied. Well, partially.
Everything she had stolen from the warehouse wasn’t just the things that the Gardener won, but also some others. But she wasn’t going to tell him that.
The Gardener scrutinised her face. With his years of experience in interrogation and torture, he figured out Lillian was partially lying. However, he decided against speaking about it.
After a bit and forth, the Gardener decided to take a glance down at her hand, finding four rings held in her palm.
He then asked:
"I recall I only won three. The [Veridian Gem Flower], the [Mystical Golden Bough], and lastly, the [Arcane Bombardier]. What is the last?"
Lillian smirked smugly, "The corpse of the monster you came to the auction for. The corpse of the Twin-headed Seawater Leviathan, the Rank B monster, that’s currently hidden inside this ring~..."
"Ah... So, you stole that too?" The Gardener responded, taking the three rings he won off Lillian’s hand.
The Rabbit gave another exasperated sigh. Does this man love the law that much?
"Well, it’s not really stolen if it belonged to me in the first place."
The Gardener raised an eyebrow under his mask, obviously sceptical about what she said. He then watched as Lillian turned her head and gestured towards her serpent earring.
"This is the Item that I got from killing it. Is that enough proof?"
Narrowing his eyes, the man held his hand out to her, gesturing for her to hand it over, "Let me analyse first before making my judgement. There are consequences of lying."
Without hesitation, Lillian took off her earring and handed it over to him, allowing him to analyse it with the help of the Jester. Soon enough, he was able to confirm that what she said was correct.
"Impressive... I apologise for doubting you. From my information on it, it was a monster that had escaped from the frontlines. Even if it was most likely severly injured, judging by your story, you weren’t a Tier 3 mage at the time you defeated it. Could you clear up my suspicion?"
"The leviathan was definitely wounded the time I got there, with its missing eyes and such, but I was only able to defeat it with the help of a Tier 3 mage at the time. Nearlo Farland, if you are curious."
"... The Pirate of the Rickety Ship?" The Gardener inquired before rubbing his chin, "That’s rather surprising... I’ve heard of rumours about him being a recluse and quiet person, to think he would socialise with others..."
Seeing that he was in thought, Lillian smiled broadly inside. There was a reason she gave out Nearlo’s name, and it was so that the Gardener would know that she had connections to a powerful and well-known mage.
’That should make me look a bit more favourable...’
Exiting out of her monologue, she watched as the Gardener reached for the ring that held the leviathan.
With a playful glint in her eyes, she moved her hand away, dodging the Gardener, who was visibly confused by this.
Looking up at Lillian, he watched as she held it in between her fingers with a bargaining look in her eyes, "You want this, correct? I’ll hand it over under two conditions."
"... You don’t have much of a bargaining chip, considering just that ring will be enough to cover the debt you have to me."
"Oh, I know. And that’s why that’s one of the two conditions." Lillian slowly held the ring towards the Gardener, "The last condition is that... The moment you take this ring, you have to wholeheartedly support my relationship with your niece. Simple, right—?"
Just as Lillian was about to finish her word, the Gardener had already snatched the ring out of her hand.
While scrutinising the ring, the Gardener spared Lillian a single glance and said:
"My requirements are much lower compared to the others. You have shown me you’re capable in battle and displayed that you have connections. That’s enough for me."
Lillian blinked, "Eh?"
Was it just that easy? She barely did much to gain his approval! She had expected to argue and even face him in some kind of court setting! Were his requirements really that low...?
’It doesn’t matter.’
With one down, she only needed two more supporters. She assumed Marionette was voting for their relationship, so she should aim for either the aunt or the grandparents.
’Just a little bit more before she’s mine...’ Lillian thought, holding her chin as she looked out the window.
Her eyes looked over the scenery; the limousine seemed to be driving on a road through a dense and dark forest... Where were they?
"The Roselle family has countless estates spread over the world." The Gardener noticed Lillian’s confusion, "We are nearing one of them now. That would be where you will train to be an attendant, assuming you know nothing about the job."
"H-huh? Attendant?"
She...
She was going to be an attendant?
