Chapter 554: A Wall Between Love?
Chapter 554: A Wall Between Love?
Marionette looked towards the wall on her left, her eyes widening slightly as realisation appeared. ’Isn’t that one next to mine?’
She was in Guest Room 1, so if Lillian was in Guest Room 2...
Carefully getting out of her bed, Marionette stumbled and walked over to the wall, placing her hand against it. She then caressed it with her hand, her fingers gliding over its surface as a look of longing appeared in her eyes.
They were so close... After so long...
Just one wall. If she just tore down this wall, then... She would be able to see Lillian...
As her thoughts of seeing Lillian distracted her, the veins of her wrist began to become a tinge darker.
’I can’t...’
Much to Marionette’s disappointment and dismay, if she were to meet Lillian now, she would risk the Rabbit getting hurt because of her...
She would be more confident if Lillian were stronger. But, right now, she was confident that Lillian wasn’t strong enough to evade and repel the attacks of the True Darkness lingering within her body.
Clenching her fist, Marionette could do nothing but find peace in Lillian’s voice. At this current point in time, she wasn’t even certain that she would be well enough to attend the Legacy Table.
Slightly upset over her situation, all Marionette could do was sigh and endure.
The quicker she got better, the more likely her father and her family would accept Lillian.
As she was deep in thought, she was soon pulled back into reality by the sound of Lillian’s voice resounding from her phone.
"Man, it’s so bright in here... Hold on a second, Mari. I just need to close these—W-WOAH!"
THUMP.
Marionette recoiled back, sensing something had hit the other side of the wall she was leaning on. She then leaned back in again, placing her phone against the side of her ear.
Lillian, who had stood up from her bed to close the curtains, had accidentally caught her foot on the blanket and tripped, causing her to roll and slam her forehead against the right wall.
She hissed in pain, rubbing her forehead and the tip of her nose with a pained expression as the charm of her necklace dangled from her neck.
’How did I even trip?! So embarrassing...’
With her phone still in her hand, Lillian listened through her pain as Marionette’s voice resounded softly from the speakers:
"Are you... Okay? I heard something."
"Ugh, yep, yep! I’m all good, just a bit of a trip, but nothing serious..." Lillian groaned with a crooked smile as she turned around.
Deciding it wasn’t worth it to close the curtains, she sat on the ground and leaned her back against the wall, while throwing hateful glares at the window as if it were the cause of her sudden accident.
With her back resting against the wall, Lillian leaned her head back, resting it as well as she placed her phone against her ear, ignoring the ray of sunlight falling onto her face.
"Hey Marionette... Are you willing to do a video call? I want to see your face."
Marionette, who was on the other side of the wall, turned around and sat on the floor. She then leaned back; her head and back completely resting against the wall behind her - just like Lillian.
Marionette answered with regret:
"Sorry, but... Currently, might not be the best of times..."
She didn’t want Lillian to see her in her current state, and she doubted that Lillian would be able to, as the entire inside of her room was filled with a miasma-like darkness.
"Oh... I see..." Lillian whispered dejectedly.
On the other side, Lillian twirled a lock of her white hair around her finger, having now forgotten completely about the matter with the curtains.
With a soft and quiet voice, the Rabbit then asked:
"I’m sorry if I’m disturbing you at all. Are you currently out on a mission?"
"Something... Like that." Marionette answered vaguely. "And you aren’t disturbing me in the least, Lillian. Don’t worry."
Lillian nodded slightly with a warm smile.
"I see... Then, are you on a mission in the Underworld? Or are you currently in an estate?"
"Inside an estate." Marionette then paused before adding vaguely again, "Inside the guest room’s of an estate, to be exact."
Lillian nodded, but found herself raising an eyebrow slightly. She thought back to the room next to hers for a split second before dashing the thought away.
Why would she be here? If Lillian recalled, she had told Marionette that she was staying at this estate.
If the Assassin really was here, the two would’ve been wrapped in each other’s arms by now.
Lillian felt her heart clench a bit at the thought. She then pressed her phone closer to her ear.
Marionette, who was on the other side, continued to rest her back against the wall while drinking down her medication with the help of her metal canteen.
The darkness in her veins receded, allowing her comfort as the pain from it subsided slightly - it was like her veins were flowing not blood but molten lava.
When she finished, she heard Lillian speak.
"Marionette... When do you think we can see each other again?" Lillian’s voice gradually became quieter. "I miss you..."
Upon hearing her words, Marionette found her heart to squeeze and ache, her muscles tensing as she gritted her teeth in frustration. She was now experiencing conflict in her resolve.
On one side, she knew that by enduring this trial, she would gain the approval for her relationship with Lillian.
However... She was now starting to regret this. Maybe she shouldn’t have let her emotions take control of her at that time.
If she hadn’t offered to undergo the surgery sooner, then maybe...
"Soon, Lillian... Soon, I promise..." Marionette uttered, hiding her regret.
Then maybe she could’ve seen Lillian by now.
’Perhaps this was what I’ve been trained for...’
This must be the reason why she was trained to regulate and control her emotions...
It seems her skills had gotten rustier when Lillian came into her life.
Marionette smiled softly.
’It doesn’t matter...’
