Chapter 614: Time to Gamble?
Chapter 614: Time to Gamble?
Seeing that she had managed to receive Lillian’s attention, Millis smirked as she looked back - opening her mouth and saying:
"So, how ya wanna go about this? Do ya actually wanna gamble or ya just comin’ along with me?"
"I’ll be gambling with you." Lillian nodded her head slightly, causing the Heroine’s face light up with joy.
"OOO~! For real!?" Millis shouted, skipping happily as they walked to the nearest casino.
And as she skipped, Lillian lowered her gaze to a translucent line attached to the Heroine’s back, which extended to her body; attached, as well.
This was Lillian’s Parasitic Line.
For the soul to linger outside of its physical body, it would need a tether.
The tether didn’t have to be anything special; all it needed to do was link a person’s spiritual body to a constant stream of mana, which, in this case, could be another person.
Sure, she could’ve used her crown as the source, but who knew when that would run out? It was a risky source of mana, especially when she was going to be using a lot of it later.
Fortunately, she had the kind-hearted Heroine with her, who didn’t seem to mind Lillian leeching off of her mana periodically.
This was also when Lillian discovered that Millis had quite a high mana reserve.
Every time she latched onto someone with her Parasitic Element, she would also get back a rough estimate of her target’s mana reserves.
Unfortunately, when this useful piece of information made it to her head, it would always be subconsciously forgotten or ignored in the heat of battle.
No matter how insistent it was to become a centre of focus, Lillian would undoubtedly forget it, unless she spared a fraction of her attention, which she normally couldn’t risk doing.
It was like a person setting an alarm for early morning, but never getting around to waking up. Despite the alarm’s insistent ringing for them to get up, they would either ignore it or turn it off so they could go back to being engrossed in their dream.
Nonetheless, Lillian’s Parasitic Element still continued to show its worth.
’It’s so convenient...’ Lillian thought, following closely behind Millis.
With each occasion that required her to utilise her Parasitic Element, she was always reminded of the thought of getting to know more about her ability.
It was such a versatile element to have, not only for combat-related subjects, but also for more supportive sides of things; it was almost like a waste not use it more creatively.
’Unfortunately, learning will have to wait for another time...’
Lillian didn’t quite have the luxury of being able to practice and learn more about her element at this moment.
After a few more minutes of walking and more curious glances, both Lillian and Millis reached the entrance of a casino.
[The Golden Wish Pond] was what it was called.
Once Millis showed her ID to the guards stationed outside and introduced Lillian as her subordinate, they were allowed in; this was the plan they had come up with along the way here.
At first, the guards weren’t on board with the idea of letting Lillian in; however, with just a leak of her aura, they shrank back.
They were just some low-tier mages; although their job paid well, it wasn’t enough for them to incur the wrath of a much stronger mage and possibly lose their lives.
Death was more of an occurrence in the Underworld.
Lillian, who was adamant about not revealing her identity, walked past the two frightened guards, not minding her current position.
She was fine with acting as a subordinate.
’Millis is a good boss after all, well, lore-wise.’
In the game, it had been stated by countless figures and characters that Millis had an air of charisma and trustworthiness, causing people to feel inclined to listen to her.
And later on in the story, she would become an incredible leader.
But Lillian knew this was just the work of her Main Character aura, the thing causing those around her to feel comfort in her presence.
’I wonder how well it’s affecting me...’ Lillian thought briefly.
The reason she was so close to Millis. Was it because she wanted to, or because... she wanted to?
Lillian sighed and threw the thought to the back of her mind; it wasn’t relevant enough, right now.
And if she had been honest, she also had a similar aura herself due to her [Maiden of Sinking] trait.
As long as there was water around her or there was enough humidity, an ordinary person around her would feel inclined to get closer to her, just so they could feel the calm-inducing aura she gave off.
After being let in, the two were blinded by the luxurious sight inside.
The interior was large, and the ceiling was supported by pillars. It had an open second floor that was guarded by railings. And the entire casino was bustling inside.
Lillian glanced around.
Tall slot machines were arranged in several lanes. Most were back-to-back and were being occupied by individuals trying their luck to win big.
Card and betting tables were scattered around in numerous numbers, always surrounded by people, no matter what.
There were more, but Lillian’s attention soon fell on the sight of a man being dragged out of the establishment, thrashing about to try and get free as he shouted profanities:
"BUNCH OF CHEATING FUCKS, GET OFF OF ME! I DIDN’T FUCKING CHEAT, SO GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY!"
Lillian watched this scene with a wry expression, soon dragging her eyes away from the scene, whistling.
She can sympathise with the man to a degree, but not enough to feel bad for him. Even though it was harder to earn a living in the Underworld, there were many better ways than going to a casino - albeit those ways are much less morally accepted.
Turning to Millis, she watched as the Heroine pulled a stack of cash out of an ATM before handing it over to a cage cashier - a worker who exchanged money for casino chips.
After getting her chips, Millis turned on her heel, facing Lillian and saying:
"I’ll be gambling a bit first! Let’s see if we can win big, shall we? Hehe!"
Lillian then watched as the Heroine dashed off to have fun, leaving Lillian behind to sigh.
Turning her head towards the ATM, she walked up to it - the surface of her mask lighting up as the screen blinked at her, having detected her presence.
It then asked whether or not she would like to withdraw cash.
’Welp... I guess it’s time to gamble, then...’
