Chapter 1695: Slick escape: Part-2

Chapter 1695: Slick escape: Part-2

“YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! WHERE THE FUCK HAVE YOU ALL BEEN?!”

The sheer force behind the voice caused several nearby soldiers to instinctively turn their heads. Even the Leader flinched slightly before his visor automatically highlighted the source of the disturbance.

A young man in his twenties stood several meters away, covered from head to toe in blood. Bruises darkened almost every visible part of his body, and his clothes were so thoroughly soaked that it looked as though he had been submerged inside a river of crimson. One of his arms hung unnaturally at his side, clearly dislocated, yet he appeared completely unaware of the injury.

His attention remained locked upon the approaching rescue personnel.

“If-If you had come just a little earlier…” His voice cracked before rising into another furious shout. “If you had come even a few fucking minutes earlier, my wife would still be alive!”

Tears streamed down his face as he tightened his grip around the body of a young woman.

The rescue personnel slowed their approach.

Every person present could see that the man was standing on the edge of complete psychological collapse.

“M-My darling…” he whispered while staring at the woman’s pale face. “Why did this happen to us…? We didn’t do anything wrong… We weren’t hurting anyone…”

His voice trembled uncontrollably.

The young man’s gaze drifted downward toward the terrible wounds covering the woman’s body, and fresh tears immediately filled his bloodshot eyes.

“If I had been there…” he muttered. “If I had reached you sooner… if those monsters had come after me instead of you… Then maybe this wouldn’t have happened.”

His breathing became uneven.

His shoulders shook violently.

The pain inside his voice was so raw that even several soldiers found themselves looking away.

“They chased everyone like animals…” he continued while staring into nothing. “There was a woman running with her daughter. I-I remember hearing them screaming for help while that monster followed them through the corridor. He wasn’t even running…. He wasn’t angry…. He wasn’t shouting.”

The young man began laughing weakly before immediately breaking down again.

“He was s-singing.”

The surrounding soldiers exchanged glances.

“He was fucking singing!”

His voice grew louder.

“He walked through the blood while singing some stupid cheerful song. People were dying around him. Guards were shooting at him. Families were running for their lives, and he just kept singing like he was enjoying a performance.”

The man’s face twisted with horror.

The rescue personnel remained silent.

Nobody doubted him.

The terror in his eyes made it obvious that he wasn’t inventing anything.

“He smiled the entire time…” the young man whispered. “Even now I can still hear it. That stupid song. T-That fucking song!”

His grip tightened around his wife’s corpse.

“M-My darling… my darling… why did this happen to us…?” the young man cried, his voice breaking between sobs as tears streamed down his blood-covered face. “Sniff… sniff… If-If only I had been there when those fucking monsters hurt you like this… if only I had reached you sooner…”

His entire body trembled as he held the woman’s lifeless body against his chest. Blood stained both of them so heavily that it became difficult to tell where one ended and the other began. With his dislocated arm hanging uselessly at his side, he tightened his remaining grip around her as though he could somehow protect her even now.

Slowly lowering his head, he pressed a gentle kiss against her forehead. His own face was already soaked with blood, and as he held her closer, streaks of drying flesh and blood smeared across his skin. The sight was disturbing, yet the young man seemed completely unaware of it. At that moment, the horror surrounding him no longer existed. Only the woman in his arms mattered.

“I-It’s alright, darling…” he whispered weakly while forcing a fragile smile onto his trembling lips. “It’s alright… nobody’s going to hurt you anymore… nobody can hurt you now…”

His fingers gently brushed through her blood-matted hair.

“Don’t worry…” he continued softly, his voice growing quieter with every word. “You won’t be alone anymore… ahah… never again…”

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead once more, his eyes filled with a mixture of overwhelming love, unbearable grief, and something else that immediately alarmed everyone watching.

There was a dangerous emptiness behind that tenderness.

A quiet surrender!

The look of someone who no longer had any reason to remain among the living.

Several members of the rescue team exchanged uneasy glances. Years of experience had taught them how to recognise the warning signs of severe psychological collapse, and every instinct told them the same thing.

The young man’s mind was breaking apart before their eyes, and if they left him alone for even a short period of time, there was a very real possibility that he would choose to follow the woman he refused to let go.

Without wasting another second, the medic slowly drew a compact neural sedation pistol from his belt.

The weapon barely made a sound.

A targeting reticle locked onto the man’s neck.

Then the trigger was pulled.

Thup!

A compressed dart struck its target.

The young man blinked once.

Twice.

Then all strength left his body.

The corpse slipped from his arms as his consciousness faded.

Several rescue personnel rushed forward and carefully caught him before he struck the ground.

Anti-gravity stretchers immediately floated into position beneath him.

The Leader watched the entire scene in silence.

Behind his visor, his expression had become frighteningly dark.

For all of humanity’s advanced technology, military power, and emergency response systems, none of it had arrived in time to save the people lying dead across the zoo.

“Fucking monsters…”

The words escaped through gritted teeth.

As the unconscious young man was loaded onto a hovering stretcher, the Leader frowned slightly.

Something about him… felt familiar?

The blood and flesh made identification difficult.

The bruises obscured many of his features.

Yet there was something about his face.

Something about his voice.

Something that tugged at the edge of memory.

The Leader took a step forward, intending to get a closer look.

Before he could, a communication alert flashed across his visor.

“Unit Five. Proceed to the Control Room immediately.”

The Commander’s voice echoed through the encrypted channel.

The Leader hesitated briefly before suppressing the thought.

“Understood.”

Without further delay, he turned and headed toward the Control Room.

Meanwhile, the rescue personnel guided the hovering stretcher toward the evacuation zone.

Rows of sleek white medical vehicles floated silently above the ground, their anti-gravity engines producing only a soft humming sound.

One by one, the evacuation vehicles rose into the sky.

Their engines left glowing trails of light across the darkness as they accelerated toward the distant hospitals, carrying the wounded away from a massacre that would haunt every survivor for the rest of their lives.

The rescue medic guided the hovering stretcher toward one of the waiting evacuation vehicles, his attention focused on the streams of medical information continuously updating across his visor.

Everything appeared to be proceeding normally.

As the medic approached the nearest vehicle, a nurse standing inside immediately prepared a medical capsule and activated several diagnostic systems. However, the moment she looked toward the incoming stretcher, confusion appeared on her face.

“…Why is the stretcher empty?”

The rescue worker blinked.

For a brief moment, he didn’t understand what she meant.

Then he looked down.

His heart nearly stopped.

The stretcher was empty.

Completely empty!

The unconscious young man who had been lying there only moments ago had vanished without leaving behind so much as a single warning.

“W-What the hell…?”

The rescue worker grabbed the edges of the hovering stretcher and stared at it in disbelief. His mind desperately searched for an explanation, but none of them made sense.

“That’s impossible.”

The nurse immediately jumped down from the vehicle.

“What happened to the patient?”

“I don’t know!” the rescue worker shouted, panic creeping into his voice. “He was right here! I personally saw the dart hit his neck! The dosage should’ve kept him unconscious for hours!”

His eyes widened.

A horrifying possibility entered his mind.

“D-Did he fall off somewhere? Did I somehow lose him while transporting him?”

The thought alone was enough to make him feel sick.

Losing a patient during an evacuation was already catastrophic.

His gaze moved frantically across the ground, searching back to find him otherwise, he fucked up!

Meanwhile, far away from the blood-soaked zoo, a pile of discarded clothing lay abandoned in the corner of a narrow alley. Fresh blood continued dripping from the fabric, staining the pavement below as though someone had removed the clothes only moments ago.

“Hmmm~ Llaaa~ laaa~ laa~”

A gentle hymn echoed through the darkness.

“You live the dark boy, I cannot pretend~La~Lhaa~”

The melody sounded strangely pleasant.

Almost cheerful~

A young man quietly emerged from deeper within the alleyway wearing an entirely different set of new clothes. The blood that had once covered him was gone. The desperate survivor rescued from the zoo had seemingly vanished, replaced by a calm young man casually strolling through the heart of the Empire.

“I am not fazeddd~ only here to sin~ laa~ laaa~”

His voice carried softly through the empty alley as he walked with relaxed steps.

Then, without warning, he grabbed his dislocated arm.

CRACK!

The sound echoed through the alley.

The joint violently shifted back into place… the very joint he had dislocated.

Any ordinary person would have screamed.

“Call me when you want… Hmm~”

The young man merely winced before rolling his shoulder experimentally.

“Call me when you need… call me in the morning…”

Spinning a large hat around his finger before tossing it into the air and catching it again.

The young man’s lips slowly curled into a wicked grin.

“I’ll be on my way to~”

“Fuck! Your ass~”

“Fuck! Your life~”

“Fuck! Your death~”

“Fuck! Your future too~”

“And motherfucking Empire from top to bottom~”

The large hat flipped gracefully through the air before he caught it and settled it atop his head with theatrical elegance.

His humming never ceased, and neither did the wicked grin etched across his face.

Under the flickering neon lights, he resembled a performer leaving the stage after a successful show.

“Ayy~ hmmm~ laaa~ llaaa~ hmmm~ hmmm~”
