Chapter 563: Meeting Gao Ziyue (5)
The two of them passed through the enormous doors of the hall and entered a corridor completely unlike the rest of the building. The transition was abrupt, as though they had crossed an invisible boundary between two different worlds.
The moment they stepped through the entrance, the intense noise of the auction seemed to vanish as if sliced away by an invisible blade. The lively voices of the guests, the murmur of conversations, the clinking of glasses, the occasional laughter, all of it became nothing more than a distant, muffled echo, as though it were coming from somewhere far away.
Only silence remained. An elegant silence, not oppressive, but welcoming, like a quiet embrace.
The corridor’s walls were crafted from an extraordinarily rare black marble, polished so flawlessly that they reflected the golden light of the spiritual lanterns mounted at regular intervals along the passage like a deep, dark mirror.
The flames within the lanterns did not burn with ordinary fire. They were small bluish spiritual flames, steady and ethereal, illuminating the corridor without producing any heat, casting no shadows, and creating no distortion of perception.
They floated inside their crystal vessels like souls of light, motionless and eternal.
Beneath their feet, a long dark-red carpet completely absorbed the sound of their footsteps, creating the sensation of floating, as though they were walking upon a solid cloud.
Every step was silent, every movement muffled.
Every detail of that place conveyed a single message, engraved into every stone, every thread of the carpet, every spark of light, exclusivity. It was not a place for just anyone. It was a sanctuary for the few, a refuge for those whom power and status had separated from the ordinary world.
Kyrian walked calmly behind Gao Ziyue, his violet eyes taking in every detail with a curiosity he made no effort to conceal.
Even after seeing countless magnificent structures since arriving at the Sky Caravan, jade palaces, crystal towers, temples built from spiritual wood, this place still possessed an atmosphere entirely unlike any other.
It was not extravagant, nor did it try to impress with gold or jewels. It was refined, subtle, like a work of art that revealed its true beauty only to those capable of appreciating discretion.
After a few moments, the corridor ended before a single door. It was made from an unknown black wood, so dark that it seemed to swallow the surrounding light, its surface marked by incredibly subtle golden veins, delicate lines of light running through the wood like rivers of gold across a night sky.
Numerous delicate runes covered the entire doorframe, carved with a precision that could only have been the work of a master craftsman. They pulsed slowly, as though breathing, each glow revealing an extraordinarily powerful defensive formation.
Gao Ziyue slowed her pace, her eyes tracing the runes with the familiarity of someone who had spent a lifetime surrounded by such magic.
“This room was built exclusively for the Sky Family.” Her voice was low and natural, as though she were sharing a secret that did not need to be whispered.
“Each of the four great auction halls has one just like it. They’re part of an ancient agreement made generations ago, when the Sky Family established the Sky Caravan.”
She raised her hand and brushed her fingers across one of the runes, a gesture so natural it seemed instinctive. The inscriptions responded immediately, a golden light sweeping across the entire door like a wave of warmth, illuminating every vein in the wood.
“This room is located above all the other VIP rooms. It’s the most exclusive place in the entire auction house.” She paused briefly, her eyes meeting his.
“No one other than members of the family is authorized to enter here. Not even the Caravan’s most respected elders, nor the masters of powerful sects. Only those of Sky blood.”
A moment later, the door began to open silently, moving on hinges that seemed not to exist. Not even the faintest creak could be heard; it was as though the wood itself parted of its own will.
Kyrian observed the mechanism with genuine interest, his eyes trying to discern the energy patterns governing the process.
“It seems quite secure.”
“Very.” She smiled faintly, a hint of pride shining in her eyes.
“The formations can identify the Sky Family’s bloodline through spiritual essence. Any attempt to break in would be repelled immediately, and the intruder would be marked forever. They say no thief has ever managed to enter one of these rooms.”
She stepped inside first, her footsteps silent upon the carpet. Before Kyrian followed, she added, her voice becoming more thoughtful:
“Even so… I’ve never used this room before.”
Kyrian blinked in surprise.
“Never?”
She shook her head, a gesture that carried more meaning than words could express.
“Whenever I attend auctions, I use an ordinary VIP room. In disguise, just as you saw.” She paused, her eyes wandering around the room with a distant expression.
“It’s much more comfortable. Fewer stares, fewer flatterers, fewer people trying to please someone they don’t even know. People behave differently when they know who you are. They become fake, calculating, always trying to gain something.”
An amused yet slightly bitter smile appeared on her lips.
“In an ordinary VIP room, I can observe people without being observed. I can see who they truly are, without the masks they wear in front of the Heir of the Sky.”
Kyrian understood immediately.
“So…” he asked as he stepped inside, his eyes sweeping across the room.
“Why is today different?”
Gao Ziyue slowly turned toward him, her eyes meeting his. For several seconds, she simply looked at him, as though committing that moment to memory. The silence between them was not uncomfortable; it was filled with meaning.
Then she smiled. It was not the polite smile she usually showed others, nor the reserved smile she wore during their conversations through the formation. It was much gentler, more genuine, as though one of her layers of defense had been removed.
“Because you’re with me.” She answered simply, as though the answer were obvious.
“As a friend. Someone who wants nothing from me except my company.”
She lowered her gaze slightly before continuing, her voice becoming softer.
“I wanted a place where we could talk without being interrupted, without anyone watching us, without any obligations or protocol separating us.” She took a deep breath, as though preparing herself for something important.
“I thought this room would be perfect for that.”
Kyrian simply nodded, the gesture sincere and uncomplicated.
“That’s a good reason.”
