Chapter 898: Chapter 1115: Rayquaza
In the pitch-black depths of space, meteorites drifted toward a certain planet. Most of them burned up as soon as they entered the atmosphere, reduced to ash by friction and turning into what people called shooting stars.
The majority of these meteorites were less than ten meters in diameter and posed no threat to the planet.
Even those around twenty meters wide were worn down by atmospheric friction until only fragments the size of a fist remained by the time they struck the ground—their destructive power was minimal.
Of course, it wasn't impossible for an exceptionally unlucky individual to be killed by such a fragment.
In reality, meteorites around twenty meters in diameter were already quite rare.
If one reached thirty meters in diameter, however, atmospheric friction would only reduce it to roughly five meters across. A meteorite of that size crashing into the surface would carry destructive power equivalent to more than a dozen high-yield bombs.
It could wipe out an entire city in an instant.
Yet meteorites of that scale had never struck the planet.
Not because they didn't exist—but because they never made it through.
They were shattered in the ozone layer by Rayquaza.
As one of the most renowned First-class Legendary, Rayquaza had taken up residence in the ozone layer ever since emerging from a Ruin within Drakoria. It treated the entire ozone layer as its territory.
Its temperament was notoriously domineering—even a passing Pokémon would be smacked aside.
Let alone a meteorite over thirty meters in diameter.
Any meteorite of that size would be obliterated the moment it appeared.
From that perspective, Rayquaza acted as the planet's security guard, protecting everyone.
In truth, whenever the planet suffered damage beyond a certain threshold, the First-class Legendaries would intervene.
However, that "certain threshold" was already catastrophic from humanity's perspective.
It wouldn't just be the destruction of a few cities, or even a dozen—it would be hundreds.
For a massive planet like this, the destruction of a dozen cities was like a tiny pinprick on human skin—it stung, but it wasn't fatal.
But if hundreds of cities were destroyed, it would be like slashing a three-to-four-centimeter gash on your arm with a knife—blood would immediately flow out.
And at that point, the First-class Legendaries would step in.
In other words, they ignored minor disturbances. But once the scale of destruction grew large enough, their duty compelled them to act.
Rayquaza had just shattered the second meteorite of the year that exceeded thirty meters in diameter, then it yawned, preparing to return to its usual slumber.
Meteorites of that size only appeared two or three times a year.
Just as it was about to leave, its body suddenly froze. Turning its head, a flicker of surprise passed through its eyes.
Two meteorites, each roughly fifty meters in diameter, were heading straight toward it.
A hint of confusion crossed Rayquaza's mind—after all, meteorites of that magnitude only appeared once every decade or so. Yet today, two had shown up at the same time.
Its instincts told it that something was off.
Though the thought lingered, the meteorites were already closing in. Of course, it could have simply dodged them, but if these meteorites struck the ground, the impact would be enough to annihilate a country the size of Drakoria.
And the subsequent damage would extend far beyond that.
A golden Hyper Beam erupted from Rayquaza's maw, blasting toward the nearest meteorite.
With Rayquaza's full-powered Hyper Beam, the meteorite shattered instantly, scattering into countless fragments. It paid them no mind—those fragments were small enough to burn up completely in the atmosphere.
Just as it prepared to fire at the second meteorite, a sudden sense of danger went through it.
Its body moved almost instinctively to the side.
At the exact moment it moved, an Ice Beam streaked through the spot it had just occupied.
Rayquaza's gaze turned cold as it fixed its eyes on the Pokémon that had launched the sneak attack.
The unknown creature hovered amid the debris of the meteorite it had just destroyed.
'Had it emerged from within the meteorite itself?'
The thought flashed through Rayquaza's mind.
The unknown Pokémon swung its arm and fired another Ice Beam toward Rayquaza.
Rayquaza met it with a Dragon Pulse.
As the two attacks collided, the Dragon Pulse effortlessly tore through the Ice Beam.
With a deafening blast, the Dragon Pulse engulfed the unknown Pokémon.
Believing it had dealt with the threat, Rayquaza turned to focus on the second meteorite—only to feel that familiar chill of danger once again.
Turning back, it saw another Ice Beam heading its way.
Rayquaza swiftly maneuvered through the air, closing in on its opponent as a surge of powerful Dragon-type energy enveloped its body.
Dragon Rush!
The unknown Pokémon on the opposing side had now transformed into a completely different appearance. Its body had become much sturdier and more robust than before, seemingly having switched to some kind of defensive form.
Pokémon capable of changing forms weren't unheard of—just relatively rare.
For instance, Julian's Aegislash had two forms.
Then there was Rotom, which could change its form and Typing depending on the appliance it possessed.
It seemed that this unknown Pokémon had just used this defensive form to withstand Rayquaza's Dragon Pulse.
Now, facing Rayquaza's Dragon Rush, the unknown Pokémon suddenly shifted forms again. Its body became incredibly sleek and slender, allowing it to move rapidly through the ozone layer.
Seeing this, Rayquaza had no intention of letting it escape and pursued with the energy of its Dragon Rush locked onto the unknown Pokémon.
However, in this newly switched form, the Pokémon was incredibly fast.
For a moment, even Rayquaza couldn't catch up.
Ordinarily, this wouldn't be a major issue—even if it couldn't catch it immediately, it would eventually.
But there was still one meteorite Rayquaza hadn't dealt with.
Thanks to the repeated delays caused by this unknown Pokémon, that meteorite was now almost out of the ozone layer.
Realizing this, Rayquaza immediately abandoned the chase and sped straight toward the meteorite, preparing to fire a Hyper Beam to destroy it before it could pass through.
But before the Hyper Beam could fully charge, Rayquaza was struck from behind by an Ice Beam.
Enduring the attack, Rayquaza forced the Hyper Beam to completion. In mere moments, the energy was fully gathered.
BOOM!!
The Hyper Beam shot toward the meteorite at tremendous speed.
But the unknown Pokémon moved even faster.
It darted in front of the Hyper Beam, its body shifting once more into that heavy defensive form.
Its thick arms crossed before it, forming a shield-like barrier as it resolutely placed itself in front of the Hyper Beam.
BOOM!!!
The violent impact forced its body backward, and where the Hyper Beam struck, its body began to melt away like snow under heat.
With a deafening crack, half of its body was blown apart, and the remaining force of the Hyper Beam slammed into the meteorite.
However, because the beam's power had been reduced, it failed to completely shatter the meteorite—
Instead, it split into two pieces.
