Chapter 1019: Honesty Is Best Policy
Chapter 1019: Honesty Is Best Policy
“Lilith?” Rael called out, getting her attention.
She turned to him and nodded, waiting for him to speak, and so he did:
“I was thinking of bringing her back… Or do you think that’s a little disrespectful?”
“Bringing my mother back? As in, back to life?” Lilith repeated, confused.
That was exactly what he meant, and she knew that too. Deep down, she did want her back, but she also knew that messing with the dead too much would be problematic. What would she even say if her mom were to come back for real?
These thoughts continued to plague her, and they only really stopped when she realized that if her mom was watching her from somewhere, she probably didn’t want to come back either.
It may have been a warped perspective, but she felt like it was the right one. So in the end, she told him exactly that, and while Rael did see that she wanted more than what she was saying, he respected her opinion for the time being.
Though…
“Her grave will always be here now, and while she may not be here herself, if you ever change your mind and want to see her, I can revive her. Moreover, if you ever want to meet her, I think I can make that happen too,” Rael said, pondering over it for a moment.
“Soul Manipulation, to an extent, seems pretty simple, and since I’m so powerful, I can definitely pull a few strings. So, how does that sound?”
Lilith stared at him, then sighed, wiping off yet another stray tear from her cheek as she nodded at him.
“Okay. I promise I’ll tell you if I ever change my mind.”
And with that, the two of them went back upstairs. She did place a flower at her mother’s grave, and Rael did too, but she didn’t linger there, since she knew no one was actually there.
When they arrived back at the top, in the center of the cathedral, they were both surprised to see many regular demons and Maiden Demons surrounding them. They had their weapons out, and from the looks of things, they weren’t exactly happy to see them.
“An ambush?” Lilith muttered out loud.
Rael nodded. “It looks like it. Though, to ambush us like this, just how bored are they? I mean, props to them for not attacking us in the graveyard, but damn. Maiden Demons, eh?”
He was a little speechless, to say the least.
But on the bright side, with so many fighters gathered, Rael’s eyes landed on four in particular. Three women and one man. They were on the skinnier side, and judging by their stances, they were all mages.
However, they were also the same people who had tarnished Lilith’s mother’s grave. So for that reason alone, Rael decided to skip all the pleasantries and get straight to work.
He glanced at over one hundred demons, and with a single thought, he turned them all to dust. One blink was all it took, and the only four demons who witnessed this were immediately startled, realizing just what kind of trouble they had gotten themselves into.
Sure, Lilith might be a Demon King, but she was still a newbie. From all the rumors they had heard, she was weaker than the former Demon King, and her getting the throne was something like a gift rather than a victory.
Why else was the former Demon King still alive?
They had gone into this with that assumption, feeling like she would be easy to handle. But they most definitely hadn’t expected to see Rael, who was even more powerful than the heavens themselves.
Without a sound, Rael took a few steps forward, his footsteps silent too as he approached the four demons. They couldn’t even take a step out of fright, nor could they circulate their mana.
As it stood, death was standing right in front of them.
But how could he let them off so easily?
“You know, I’m a bit curious. Why did the four of you do what you did? Ah, and before you act innocent — every time you lie to me, I will chop your soul in two and feed one half to a random cerberus I find. So tell the truth and only the truth, would you?”
At Rael’s words, the demons quivered. As for Lilith, she hadn’t known that these were the ones responsible, but now that she did, she wanted nothing more than to rip their souls out and torture them for all of eternity.
Naturally, Rael was on the same wavelength as her, at least in that regard.
“For starters, what was the motivation behind tarnishing her mother’s grave? You, the one with the messed-up horns. Speak.”
“I… Uh… I destroyed it because she’s a traitor.”
Rael clicked his tongue. “There’s a whole section dedicated to traitors. Why her in particular?”
The demon lowered his head in fright. “T-There’s no — AAAAAH!”
Before the demon could finish his words, Rael placed his hand on the demon’s forehead, drawing out a part of his soul and ripping it free. As he stared at the faint crimson orb in his palm, Rael clicked his tongue.
“This doesn’t even look that appetizing. I doubt a cerberus would eat it. It might be better to just use it as a basketball, maybe?” Rael commented out loud, and to the horror of the demons, he picked up the soul fragment and tossed it as though making a three-point shot.
Yet he didn’t stand around to catch it, so the moment it landed, it dispersed into nothingness, causing the demon it had been ripped from to spasm in pain, his voice gone completely.
Rael brushed the soul residue off his hands and scoffed in disgust before moving on to the next demon.
He smiled widely and said:
“The same question applies to you. Answer it honestly, yeah?”
But of course, even if they did answer, Rael was definitely not going to let them off lightly.
Not lightly at all.
