Chapter 674: Subordinate
Chapter 674: Subordinate
"..."
"What?"
William was shocked.
After all, he had just witnessed Rael kill two extremely powerful beings without breaking a sweat.
And yet, that very same person was now trying to recruit him?
If only he could refuse.
But he felt like a "No" would mean certain death.
So in turn...
"What do you mean by subordinate?"
Rael smiled.
"I mean exactly that. Become my subordinate, and I shall spare your life."
There was something in the back of Rael’s mind that made him want to keep and nurture William, just to see how far he could climb.
He was someone Rael could obviously turn into his construct and control however he wished, but at the moment, William did not give him any incentive to do so.
William was simply someone who was at the right place and at the right time.
So Rael did not blame him for stealing his shadow.
Really.
It was fine.
But it would not be fine if he refused now.
"The clock is ticking, William."
"I do not have all day, as I wish to spend the remainder of my time in the Demonic Realm embracing my wife. Every second you spend not making up your mind is a second I am away from my wife. Take that into account as you think about my offer."
Rael raised both his hands and began counting down from ten.
One finger lowered, then two, three...
William was forced to make up his mind quickly.
After all, with every passing second, Rael’s expression grew even more menacing.
And in the end, as much as he did not want to, he abruptly nodded.
"Fine... I’ll become your subordinate. So what now?"
"Now? Nothing much, to be honest. I have not thought that far," Rael said.
Then, he tapped the air a few times.
<Friend Request Sent.>
William’s brow twitched, but he accepted without any complaints.
<New Friend!>
<William, The Demon of Shadows is now your friend!>
Hmm...
Perfect.
"For now, I do not have many commands for you, but I want you to reach Grade 8 in the next year or so."
William’s eyes widened.
"You want me to jump two Grades in a year?"
"Of course," Rael replied. "It is not very hard to do, but I want you to be at least Calamity Class when you do so. I do not care how you do it or who you need to massacre to get your feats up, but if I come back here in a year and you are not at least Grade 8, I will rip out your soul and feed it to your dog."
Hearing Rael’s vulgar words, William could not say a thing.
He was more puzzled than afraid.
But as he opened his mouth, prepared to speak, Rael interrupted him.
"Before you talk about limits, I want you to shut your mouth. I know you can level up, and I know you can buy any race and skill or whatever. You have the Premium Shop too, do you not?"
"...How do you know?" William replied, wary.
Rael rolled his eyes.
"Does not matter. Anyway, I am off. Be safe or whatever, because I will evaluate you in a year."
With those words, Rael turned around, prepared to just walk away.
But that was when Reili suddenly ran up to Rael and grabbed his hand.
"Aren’t you forgetting something?"
Rael frowned and turned around.
"Do not touch me."
Reili’s hand trembled, and he was forced to let go.
He was clearly unhappy.
But at the moment, he was Rael’s construct.
"Know your place, Reili. Had you been stronger, you would not have ended up in this position. If you want freedom, then either convince me or the Demon King. Either way, do not expect to regain your freedom easily."
After all, who in their right mind would let go of someone who was Grade 9?
If anything, Johan could come up and tell Rael to free his son.
In which case, Rael would reluctantly agree.
Maybe.
Still...
"Do you not have any humanity?" Reili grumbled.
"That is very rich coming from a demon," Rael replied with a sigh. "Now stop acting up and settle down. We will be heading back to my world very soon. You will be my retainer, since you are very strong."
He was even more reluctant now, but since he could not exactly refuse, he just sucked it up and vanished out of sight.
Rael noticed that he was heading back to his territory.
Either way, Reili was not an issue.
But now, with everything done and over with, Rael proceeded to calmly walk back toward Lilith.
Amidst the chaos and conflict that had ensued after Rael effortlessly killed two royals was Lilith, who had jumped down from the stands and begun slowly making her way toward him.
Then, as if on cue, she jumped into his embrace and hugged him tightly.
From how fast her heart was beating, he knew that she was both relieved and grief-stricken.
They were people she respected at one point.
But they were also the same people who had disregarded her this entire time.
So he simply brushed her hair and calmly patted her back as he began floating up into the sky.
Then, he slowly flew back to Velmar.
Along the way, Lilith both laughed and cried.
...He could not understand it.
But he also did not judge her and let her experience whatever emotions she needed.
He slowed down considerably, and instead of heading back to Velmar, he simply ascended into the sky, past the clouds, and eventually out of this planet.
Although it was called a realm, it really was just a really, really big planet.
Really big.
Regardless of that, Rael hovered in space with Lilith in his arms and observed the planet, as well as the stars beyond it.
It really was beautiful.
But not as beautiful as the woman who was sobbing in his embrace.
Rael leaned in and gave her a kiss on the forehead, then relaxed.
Although their time in the Demonic Realm was short, Rael felt like they had made a fair deal.
But as he prepared to establish contact with his world, a voice suddenly rang out inside his head, belonging to none other than Johan.
[Could you bring Lilith over to the throne room? There is something I need to talk to her about.]
