Chapter 629: To The Temple Of Nature! Part-4.
’You said that this artifact once used to be real... your words seem to imply that it doesn’t exist anymore...’
[Why do you think fairies that could simply be born out of nowhere using that artifact ended up going nearly extinct?]
[Their main source of life, the ’Fountain of Elemental Life,’ was destroyed in a conflict that happened much earlier than the thousand-year war...]
’You mean that their population had started to deteriorate from the very beginning of the thousand-year war!?’
’No wonder they nearly went extinct... not only there were no new births for nearly a thousand years, they were even actively targeted by both demons and other races...’
Looking at Lyria and Miria, smiling happily as they greeted the other fairies present around the fountain, Lia could only shake her head in helplessness.
’I kind of understand now why all awakeners dislike raiding dungeons that mimic the past...’
Even though Lia knew that something bad was going to happen, she was powerless to help Lyria and Miria and change their fate; the calamity had already happened, and she was just looking at the long-gone past now.
She was unable to change what had already happened and could only watch this past record of history play in front of her like a bystander.
[Aside from the protection of the dragon valley, the only reason why the fairy race hasn’t gone extinct yet is because they are immortal creatures...]
[Their bodies are made of mana and elementals; they have no concept of aging at all... their bodies remain mostly the same since birth...]
[Unless killed by external forces, a fairy never dies... those fairies that are living under the protection of the dragon valley will not have their population increased but it won’t decrease much either...]
Lia sighed and stopped thinking about the matter further, as she didn’t want to make herself depressed over something that had happened long ago in the past.
Lyria and Miria introduced Lia to several of their friends excitedly, and every one of them mistook Lia for a royal fairy, and they were all very friendly towards her.
Since the misunderstanding with Lyria and Miria was not resolved, Lia had only made her spirit armor disappear but left the wings of light behind her back intact so that the two little fellows wouldn’t feel betrayed.
Those wings then caused other fairies to misunderstand too, and it was too late to explain at that point, so Lia let it be.
After chatting a bit with the other fairies and looking at the legendary holy fountain, Lia and the others moved forward and entered the grand temple through the inner door.
The inside of the temple was very quiet and nearly empty; there were barely any fairies inside, but each one of those fairies had a much stronger aura than the ones outside.
’I guess these fairies in charge of the temple are the ones that are the oldest and have more strength...’
Although these older fairies were stronger, in Lia’s eyes they were still too fragile and weak, as their aura was only around the level of a C-ranker at most.
The insides of the temple were extremely beautiful; it was almost as if each and every stone and marble used to build this temple was polished to the extreme!
Everything was shiny, and the engravings of fairies and various celestial objects, like the sun, the moon, the planets, etc., were carved in the walls and pillars of the entire temple!
Walking through the grand hall, Lia and the others arrived at a massive floating statue located in the center of the grand hall.
All fairies who came to pray were praying to this statue, and there was no other statue in the entire hall.
When Lia looked at that floating statue, she realized that it was actually a massive globe on which the map of the entire universe was engraved!
’This is!?’
[The Grand Atlas of the Cosmos... the first map of the universe to be ever made...]
[The current map of the universe that the world alliance uses nowadays used this as the foundation...]
Fairies were not just a bunch of happy-go-lucky small folks; they were the pioneers in healing magic, and as the believers of the ’World,’ they had made it their mission to make an accurate map of the ’Universe.’
This floating statue was a primitive atlas of the universe on which the coordinates of the various important places and weak nodes in the spirit realm of the universe were engraved.
[If I remember it correct, this universe map fell in a spatial crack and to this day nobody knows where it got thrown off to in the vast universe...]
’Then how did they make a map based off on it if it was lost?’
[The person who caused it to be lost got a glance of it and created his own version from the memory, which later got improved by the following generations over time...]
[You humans have those things that you call ’Telescopes’... they were used to complete the map to a large extent...]
Although the map of the universe has been made, most of the universe still remains unexplored, as no one has really gone to those places that have only been observed by telescopes before.
Thus, without proper exploration, the map is still pretty much inaccurate.
To the fairy race, the universe is their God; thus, they pray to the map of the universe for blessings, but to humans and others, this map is a fortune worth a lot.
Just the healing powers of the fairies were not the reason why they were persecuted; the greed for the artifacts and the possessions of the fairy race also became a major reason why they were attacked and driven near to extinction.
Unlike humans and others, the fairy race was filled with weak fairies, and nearly all of them were non-combatants; even their technology was as good as nil.
Despite having such weak defensive capabilities, they had valuable artifacts and items in their possession, which were bound to attract others’ greed.
