Chapter 705: Maybe I should start a tea shop... Part-1.
Underground Tavern, Novo.
"You are already above 18, a proper adult, yet here you are drinking tea with this old man..."
"Young folk your age go to bars and party all night while drinking wine and enjoying the company of women..."
Hearing old man Irvin’s words, Rio clicked his tongue.
"Tch, old man, you know that I have a girlfriend, right? I don’t go to bars and clubs; if I did, she would not talk to me anymore you know..."
Rio sipped tea with his right hand as he leaned forward and rested his face on his other hand.
"As for wine... I don’t get the craze about that... it smells bad and tastes like petrol; I would rather drink a bitter karela juice than that sht..."
Hearing Rio’s words, old man Irvin leaned his back against his chair and spoke in an amused voice.
"You say it as if you have really drunk petrol, hahaha~ Well, it does taste bad, but you get used to it eventually... As they say, the beauty of an art is in the eyes of the beholder!"
Hearing Irvin’s words, Rio felt a bit awkward but didn’t show it on his face.
’Err.... I really have tasted petrol before... though it was by mistake...’
In the current world, petrol and other fossil fuels do not exist anymore because they all got used up at a very rapid pace during the age of mana descent when humans were still a weak race and had to rely on technology for combat.
In those days, most military vehicles and important equipment ran on either petrol or diesel; even electricity was mostly produced through coal or petroleum-related power plants!
In that era of chaos, humanity had to fight countless battles to make other races stop invading their territory.
As the world only had a limited reserve of petroleum, it was bound to run out sooner or later.
But then brilliant scientists came along and managed to create vehicles powered by mana cores, so the entire transport industry shifted to this clean fuel as fossil fuels ceased to exist.
So, the Rio of this world could have never drunk petrol even if he wanted to.
’Ugh, I sometimes wonder if I was an idiot in my past life?’
In his past life, the world was still in the era of petrol, and with his friend being a weirdo who liked to pull weird pranks, Rio accidentally fell for the prank and almost drank petrol once!
’Thankfully I spat it out the very next moment though... I do remember beating the sh*t out of that friend after that...’ (Friendly warning: Do not try this at home.)
Petroleum, even in a small amount, is extremely harmful for the human body; thankfully, Rio did not drink it and spat it out right away, or he would have had to be hospitalized.
Rio realized the severity of these things much later and felt puzzled whether his friend was actually trying to kill him back then.
’Talking about that weirdo, once I become strong enough, I would catch him and beat the living sh*t out of him for transporting me to this world without even asking for my permission!’
’But well... I did end up meeting Lia because I came to this world... so, perhaps I can consider letting him choose whether he wants to be beating by fists or sliced by my sword...’
While Rio was making plans of revenge against his weirdo friend, Irvin sighed as he looked at his empty tavern and spoke,
"Sigh... kiddo, ever since you have started hunting criminals, my customers have either all disappeared or put in prison by you..."
"My little tavern does not even see much business nowadays..."
At Irvin’s words, Rio rolled his eyes as he replied in his usual emotionless voice,
"It’s not like there were that many people visiting this run-down place to begin with, and your main business is running a shady information-gathering organization anyway..."
"Most of those customers of yours were weirdos who used to commit petty crimes so I just placed them in jail... as for those with heinous crimes... hehe..."
Irvin wiped the cold sweat from his forehead as he took a large gulp of wine from a wine bottle as he said,
"Kiddo, I would prefer if you don’t laugh in front of me at all... your weird laugh is too frightening for this old man’s fragile heart; I might get a heart attack from fear someday..."
After knowing Rio for so long, Irvin was now used to his poker face that never showed much expression at all.
Thus, whenever Rio smiled, it seemed extra creepy and out of place to him.
"By the way, we have already talked random things enough. Why don’t you tell me what you are here for actually?"
Hearing Irvin’s words, Rio smiled slightly as he spoke.
"That’s exactly why I prefer your organization more, old man; you understand me well..."
"Indeed, I have something urgent at hand; it’s a very important thing, but it’s more of a personal commission of mine so I would pay you for it with money this time..."
"Just keep the information of the commission secret..."
At Rio’s words, Irvin felt that something big was definitely going to happen, but he dared not refuse Rio’s request, so he nodded his head.
"Okay, tell me what you want this time?"
Rio smirked a bit as he replied to that question in an amused voice.
"I want a detailed map of the ’Beast Archipelago’... not just a regular map; I want the strategic military and dungeon-related map..."
"The location of all secret military labs and the location of a girl named ’Aino Felicia’; she’s a mermaid-type beast girl around the same age as me..."
"I would appreciate it if you can find exact location but if you can’t, then even an approximate location would also do..."
Hearing Rio’s words, Irvin’s eyes widened in shock.
"Wha-what do you need a nation’s military information for? Tha-that... I-i..."
"My organization is only based in the human empire; I do not have any people outside-"
Before Irvin could finish his sentence, Rio narrowed his eyes and spoke in a deep voice.
"Do as you are told old man... I know more about your organization than you think... don’t try to fool me... I know full well how far your organization reaches..."
"Believe me... I know a lot..."
