Chapter 1399: Driver confidence
Chapter 1399: Driver confidence
Elizabeth was their designated driver for this upcoming race. Of course, the fact that she as the daughter of Duchess Regina didn’t come into play when Michael was deciding who was going to come and represent the Rebornian company.
He decided it based only on merit. And amongst all of the Rebornians, the only one who showed great talent amongst them was Elizabeth. She was a natural. Michael couldn’t even believe how easy she had gotten used to the driving of the automobiles, even though she had only used it for a small amount of time.
And that was a few months ago. And now, she had already gotten used to maneuvering the car through the different courses.
She was an enthusiast of cars. And not just cars, but car racing. She was one of the very first pioneers who had asked Michael to start a racing circuit for those interested to compete against each other.
And even against the other talented Rebornians, Elizabeth was able to beat them in terms of their driving skills. After all, it’s not just about the speed of their car. It was also based on the way that the brakes and the acceleration pedal were used in accordance to the curves of the circuit.
This one, Michael was sure that the others couldn’t replicate. Even if they had an automobile that was much faster than the Rebornian automobiles, there was no way that they could win against them in a race. It simply wasn’t possible.
Only those who didn’t know anything about racing would think that only speed was the factor in deciding the outcome of a race.
"Have you completed your preparations?" he asked Elizabeth.
"Yep. I have. But I just have one suggestion for you."
"What is it?" Michael asked.
Elizabeth smiled. "I think it would be best if you added a clause that makes it so that there would be a handicap against me."
Michael couldn’t believe what he’d just heard. A handicap?! Was Elizabeth really that confident about her own driving skills?
"You’ll be fighting against automobiles that literally defy the laws of physics," he said to her. "They’re going to be using a lot of Nascent Influences in order to make their cars go a lot faster than the speed limit of the physical aspects of their car."
They were definitely going to be using those in order to beat the Reborn company. Essentially, this would even out the competition.
"You have to think about it this way," Elizabeth said. "If we won, people will think that we cheated. That we didn’t give other people a fair chance. After all, we’re the ones that created the racing circuit. We’re also the ones who created the automobiles. That’s an unfair advantage that people will cling to, making my victory against them unfulfilling."
Michael thought for a second and nodded, eventually agreeing with her words. "Yes, that is a problem. But we could circumvent that by giving everyone ample amount of time to practice. We’ll show them the circuits of the racetrack so that they could practice all on their own."
"You should do that," Elizabeth said. "But it’s also not going to be enough. For it to be truly convincing, for people to truly believe that the Reborn company is superior in driving and in any other aspect, then we should give everyone a one lap head start."
Michael gawked at Elizabeth’s confidence. She was going to give her opponents a one lap headstart?! That was way too much!
"That’s... that’s..."
"What? Are you not confident in my skills to do so?" Elizabeth asked.
Of course, Michael wanted to say no. but in truth, he was a little bit skeptical. A one lap handicap was simply far too much.
"Oh ye of little faith," Elizabeth said. "Do not worry. Even if those people use Nascent Influence to make their automobiles go faster, they could never win against someone who has mastered the finesse of braking and accelerating."
And in Elizabeth’s defense, she was good at driving. Michael had shown her the races from his previous life, the F1 racing and the rallies which showcased the top of the top drivers competing against each other.
She was very much inspired by the ’dream’ that he gave her. And to her credit, she was able to reach a respectable level when it came to her driving.
Michael was sure that if Elizabeth was plucked out of this world and dropped into the world of professional driving, then she would be able to hold her own even against the very best of them.
He wasn’t sure if she could win against the best, but he was sure that she wouldn’t get last. Maybe she’d get 10th or 5th place, which was very respectable, given that she’d only been able to drive for about a year or so.
This was one of her talents, after all. Her true latent potential was only unlocked when Michael awakened her.
"Alright. I’ll trust you," Michael said. "A one lap head start."
"And give them the circuit race tracks. Before the race, they’d be given enough time to go around the track to see how it feels. It’s only fair," she said.
Michael could see that, yes, Elizabeth was putting the well being of the Reborn company first and foremost in her decision making. But he was also sure that there was an aspect of selfishness in her actions.
She wanted to make a handicap because she wanted a challenge! She wanted to prove herself against the others, and give them no excuse when she won in the end.
A very driven character, Elizabeth was.
No pun intended.
Anyway, once the driver was settled, Michael then went back to their headquarters to settle some more of their businesses.
Now, they had made progress in preparing the cars, the soiree, the phones, and their products.
The only thing now that they needed to prepare was their military personnel.
Of course, Michael wasn’t going to delude himself into thinking that this was going to be a purely peaceful event!
