Part 3
The monster army was not shaken by the Grantz forces.
To them, humans were food. A large number of them jumped into the death zone on their own.
It was impossible for them to mourn; if anything, they were happy.
Above all, they were starving because they had been deprived of food, and their hunger was stronger than their fear.
Their backs were bulging as they breathed raggedly, drooled, and revealed their desires.
They were so agitated that they seemed ready to jump out of their skin at any moment. Still, none of the monsters ran ahead of the others, perhaps because they were reined in by someone more superior.
The monsters were commanded by a barbarian race known as the Marked Tribe.
Their upper bodies were bare and wore almost nothing, except a small piece of cloth wrapped around their waists.
While the Marked Tribe were on horseback checking their weapons, the ones who were watching their surroundings as if to protect them were a failure of “demonization”, called the flesh-eaters―they were pitiful people who couldn’t even become the Marked Tribe.
They had great strength but little intelligence. However, they obeyed the orders of their superior race, the Marked Tribe. It was not clear whether it was their instincts that made them do this or if they still had memories from their “human” days.
Behind them, sitting on the ground, was the boy in command.
On either side of him stood one of the Twelve Demon Lords, Keryneia, and Null, the chief of the Marked Tribe.
They looked curiously at the boy, who sat cross-legged on the ground, his cheeks resting on his hand.
“O king. It seems that the allied forces have begun to move.”
“Is that so?”
The boy looked at the sky and muttered disinterestedly.
Null, realizing there was no answer, asked a question.
“Keryneia, are we just going to wait and see?”
“It pains me to admit it, but only the Marked Tribe is intelligent. On the other hand, the monsters would not be able to understand even if you gave them detailed instructions. It’s less harmful to build a wall and wait for them to come to us.”
“After all, they are probably just soft humans. Why should we fight so cautiously?”
“We can’t win this war just by pushing our way to the front. If it were possible to win that way, the demons would have taken over the world by now.”
The Marked Tribe, which had a certain level of intelligence, and their followers, the flesh-eaters, would be able to understand some of the instructions. However, the various types of monsters would just nod their heads when informed of the plan.
This was the reason why they could not defeat the allied forces, mainly the Raven Army before the main force of the Grantz joined them. It was no use just having the ability to rush forward; if you could not flexibly read the flow of the battlefield, you would not be able to crush your opponent.
Therefore, Keryneia was able to come up with an idea that worked on the opposite principle.
If it was impossible to attack, it was better to wait for the opponent.
Even a dog can wait when told to wait. There was no reason why a monster cannot do the same.
The rest was a simple order.
Eat the enemy in front of you.
With this simple command, the monsters could terrorize humans.
So, just wait for them to attack. It will look like a thick wall to them.
The Marked Tribe, the flesh-eaters, and the monsters that were hungry and deprived of food were placed everywhere.
It was like an antlion’s den: once you entered, you could never leave.
It was not easy to enter. The fragile human being did not have that much destructive power.
“If we are not careful, we may not be able to get out.
“If that’s the case, I’ll go to the front alone.”
Null shrugged, and the sound of sword fights rang out from the front.
A yell erupted, and Keryneia and Null looked at each other.
“Looks like it’s started.”
A huge cloud of dust was swept off from the right like smoke, sending pieces of flesh and blood flying into the air. As it continued to rise, it rolled up to the feet of Keryneia and the others. Considering the distance from the front line, it was an incredible distance. When Keryneia saw the head rolling down at her feet, she stiffened, and Null stroked his chin happily and put a sarcastic smile on his lips.
“Haha, it seems even ‘humans’ have destructive power, huh?”
At Null’s provocation, Keryneia’s face turned red with shame.
The head of the Marked Tribe rolled before her.
The expression on its face was not distorted with pain. The head had probably been severed without him noticing it from the stunned expression on his face. It was as if to say that this was what you will become.
“So what are you going to do? Keryneia, something is wrong at the front.”
Null, who was becoming more and more energetic with the appearance of a powerful enemy, sensed this and gave instructions to avoid his outburst.
“I will go directly to the front, and I want you to go to the left flank. It seems they are being pushed that way as well. Perhaps, Claudia―she will amuse you enough.”
“Can I kill her?”
“Yes, no problem. Do what you want.”
“All right, then I’ll bring her head back.”
With that, Null began to run. Faster than a horse, he headed for the left wing with unusual speed.
Several of his men, the Marked Tribe, followed his back.
After surveying the scene, Keryneia knelt before the boy.
“O King. Please allow me to go to the front as well. I will surely bring good news.”
“Do as you wish.”
He was as indifferent as ever, but that was fine. There was no need to make this an unnecessary hassle. Keryneia stood and looked around at the Marked Tribe around her.
“Protect the king.”
With that, she mounted her horse and kicked it in the stomach.
No one followed her.
As much as Keryneia despised the Marked Tribe, they also despised her. Above all, there was no advantage to be gained by following her except to be subjected to abuse.
The Marked Tribe was well aware of Keryneia.
Even though his guard was up to the maximum, the boy was unimpressed.
He just stared at the blazing web of fire that spread out in the front line.
*****
Fast.
Too fast.
The leading group never stopped. The corpses of numerous monsters lay at their feet.
The sight of the overwhelming force that rushed through the enemy lines made Skaaha break out in a cold sweat.
“Liz-dono… she has become… that strong?”
The path she passed through was littered with corpses, heading towards the monsters’ main camp at a tremendous speed.
However, the deeper she went, the more monsters surrounded her.
This was because they had broken through the center and were now sandwiched between enemies on both sides.
Skaaha slashed the Ice Emperor to the side, silencing the approaching monsters, and turned around.
“Aura-dono, are you sure this is the right way? We seem to be advancing at a very fast pace.”
“No problem. We will continue to follow Liz.”
Aura, who was watching the battle on horseback, said that there was no problem, but there was uneasiness in Skaaha’s heart.
“But if we won’t be able to catch our breath with both wings and they don’t seem to be able to keep up.”
According to the plan, both wings of the Grantz forces were supposed to be the first to rush out. The plan was for the Grantz to go out first on both flanks, and then Liz and the rest of the army would penetrate the thinning center, cut the monster army in two, destroy it one by one, and win the battle.
“No problem. That’s why we had the Raven Army and the Levering Army on both flanks. Judging by the speed of the invasion in the center, Queen Claudia’s character must be desperately trying to keep up with us. The Raven Army is the same, and they all hate to lose, so they will catch up with us.”
“I agree with that. I think it’s good the way it is. And it’s not good to destroy the momentum we have.”
Selene agreed with Aura as she flicked the blood off her sword.
“The wings are lagging, but not to the point of being fatal – and!”
As Selene tried to approach Aura, a monster stood in front of her, but she leaped and smashed it in the face with a powerful knee. She then spun vertically in midair and swung her heel down on the newly arrived monster’s head. Selene landed with a flourish and looked behind her.
“It looks like the only thing behind us are the dead bodies of the monsters. It seems they have no idea how to cut off our retreat. Or maybe they don’t have any extra troops left because both wings are under attack.”
The Grantz soldiers looked at the girls, talking comfortably in the middle of the battlefield with their backs to the crowd. They were fighting desperately, but Skaaha and Selene were taking care of the monsters with ease. This was why the Grantz soldiers were so excited. Not to be left behind, the monsters approached from left and right and were destroyed.
Aura’s eyes narrowed as she watched.
“The soldiers are reacting. So we’ll continue.”
“I understand. Surely, the last thing you want to do is discourage them.”
Perhaps satisfied, or perhaps ashamed to have interfered so unnecessarily, Skaaha ran in a straight line toward the front line, spear at her back.
Selene ran ahead of her.
Aura knew from what she had heard that she had her own feelings as well.
Before Aura and the others could rush to her aid, the right-wing she was in charge of collapsed first in the battle between the Raven Army and the monsters. The fact that this fatal turn of events had occurred was a source of guilt for Selene. However, after listening to her story and having her explain the battle situation at that time, it was clear that there were some inexplicable points, so it was hard for Aura to determine whether it was her fault or not.
In any case――,
“If you bear a stigma on the battlefield, you will return it on the battlefield.”
It’s not revenge, it’s not vengeance, there’s no clear opponent like that.
It was a fight against oneself. It was a matter of emotions.
So, there was nothing that could be done to help. It was something you had to overcome on your own.
Aura can only pray that Selene regained her confidence in this battle.
“I must also do my best…”
Do the best you can.
Aura, who had decided this, had lit a certain flame in her leaden eyes.
