Part 5
Sword marks swirled in the air, and beautiful red flowers bloomed on the ground.
A heat wave rushed in, and the monsters were swept away and devoured by the fire serpent.
It was the winter season.
And yet, the battlefield was as hot as summer, so hot that sweat was pouring out by itself.
“Can they keep up….with us at this speed? They don’t possess the World’s Five Greatest Treasured Swords.”
Meteor glanced behind her in astonishment.
Nearby, the heavy and light infantry of the Grantz were fighting the monsters.
There was nothing strange about it. It was a normal scene that could be seen anywhere in a war.
But for those who were watching from the beginning, it was an amazing sight.
The first line of Grantz cavalry, with Liz in the lead, were advancing at a tremendous pace toward the main camp of the monsters. And now, thanks to their lightning-fast charge, they were almost within reach of the enemy’s main camp.
However, the second and third lines of the Grantz Central Army were composed of heavy and light infantry.
Therefore, many of them could not keep up with the speed of the cavalry and would have fallen, Meteor thought. However, when she looked back, she saw that most of the soldiers had not dropped out and were fighting bravely against the monsters as if they had more than enough strength to fight.
Meteor was struck by a warrior’s tremor.
What is it that inspired them? What is it that drove them to such an extent?
Meteor tried to find out the reason――,
――A lily banner was raised.
The banner bearer holding the emblem was covered in scars.
His breastplate was crushed, and blood poured from the joints of his armor, yet he endured the pain and did not lower the banner. He continued to stand as if rooted to the ground.
Why―for one reason and one reason only: it was the emblem of the red-haired princess they worshiped.
It would be easy to tell them to get down, but if you push them down, they would never get up again.
They had willpower. They had the willpower to forget their fear and just do their job.
There was no problem if it was a mock battle, but this was a real battlefield.
The weakest were the first to be attacked―in fact, the monsters came at them. Meteor clicked her tongue and stretched out her arms to the side on her horse. She tried to respond to the foolish soldier’s heart, to save them.
But before Meteor could reach them, the monster approaching the bannerman was sucked into the flame serpent’s mouth and hurled straight into the crowd of monsters on the other side. Next, a massive pillar of fire rose into the sky.
Fire sparks and charred flesh rained down from the sky.
Meteor looked ahead with a startled expression.
She saw her master, to whom she offered her affection.
Her back spoke to her. She declared with powerful words that she would leave no one behind.
Shadows of the past overlap with Liz.
“Oh… Uh-huh… Rey-sama… right, your heart is in her.”
Like Liz, Rey never abandoned her allies on the battlefield.
So when she said she will not abandon anyone, Meteor must respond to her feelings. She must lighten her load and send her into the final battle in perfect condition.
“Don’t let anyone get in your way. I’m going to get a little rough today.”
The corners of her mouth hung open as she chased after Liz’s back, slicing the monster with invisible threads. She had to protect her, and this time, she would protect her to the end.
“Liz-sama! We are almost at the enemy’s main camp. Leave the small fry to me and conserve your strength.”
As she called from behind, she replied with a raised fist.
A hooded figure appeared in front of Liz. In her hand, she held a red sword like that of the Flame Emperor. However, the key difference was that the weapon the figure was holding was a muddy red, giving it an ominous appearance.
“The Twelve Demon Lords…!”
Meteor, who instantly saw through the identity of the enemy, alerted Liz, who was about to pull the reins.
“Liz-sama! Don’t stop, go, I’ll take care of this!”
Meteor thrust her arm out to the side, and the Crying Serpent appeared in her hand.
Gripping the hilt tightly, Meteor kicked the horse and passed Liz, who ran in front of her with amazing leg strength.
Using her momentum――,
“I’ll take care of you myself.”
She swung a furious blow at the Twelve Demon Lords.
A powerful clang of the blade sliced through space, the impact so great that the ground beneath the feet of the Twelve Demon Lords was shattered, and dust rose from the cracked ground.
“This presence… you are… Meteor?”
The sound of her voice contained some surprise. The Twelve Demon Lords, who had their “eyes” removed after being tortured by the God of War in the past, had no choice but to guess who it was from the presence alone.
Meteor was also a person who was said to have died a thousand years ago. It was inevitable that there would be some hesitation in her judgment. And while she was confused, Liz passed beside her at a furious pace.
“I wish I could tell you that you were right… but the fact that you have hidden your face makes it impossible for me to tell who you are.”
“…So you are Meteor after all. I am Keryneia, the one who was once the Twelve Demon Lords.”
Hearing the name brought back memories of Keryneia from the past.
She was a person who had left a strong impression on Meteor, so she was able to remember her instantly.
“Ah, the one who was torn to pieces by the schemes of His Majesty Altius and Hiro…”
A thousand years ago, as Altius’ power began to expand, the villages surrounding his stronghold were attacked by bandits in rapid succession. Altius took the situation seriously and organized a strike force to save the villages.
However, the demon race was waiting to ambush them in a trap set by the Keryneia, who was right in front of them.
“…You should have been killed by Hydra, but it seems you survived in vain!”
Keryneia, who had exploded in anger, thrust out her red weapon.
But Meteor raised her Crying Serpent and swatted it away.
Sparks flew, and the smell of burnt flesh caught her nostrils.
“Sneak attack, huh? You still like to play with such cowardly moves, don’t you?”
“…I’ll kill you.”
“That’s my line. You little fry.”
Meteor snorted condescendingly at Keryneia, who unleashed her murderous intent.
After a single blink, the two collide.
The humiliation did not stop Keryneia’s rage.
She was furious, her voice rising in rage.
“I am not the same as I was then!”
A red blade with a grudge approached, but Meteor ducked and thrust.
The blade was just out of reach when Keryneia jumped back. Perhaps sensing this, Keryneia opened her mouth again with pride.
“As long as I have the Death Immortal given to me by the King, I cannot be defeated!”
“You only remember me by name?”
Meteor’s cold gaze was accompanied by the sound of metal creaking as the Crying Serpent splintered and extended. The sharp blade pierced Keryneia’s chest, passed through her back, and lifted her body. With both legs off the ground, Keryneia naturally looked down at Meteor.
“Agh…”
With her mouth wide open and blood spurting out, Keryneia grabbed the blade of the Crying Serpent and tried to pull it out with all her might while floating in the air. But the Crying Serpent was made of a chain of iron arrowheads, and when it was stretched, the joints broke and split apart. The arrowheads WEre also individually attached to a return mechanism that prevented them from being easily pulled out once they were inserted.
“If you try to force it out, your internal organs will be pulled out as well.”
“If you want, I’ll give it to you.”
Keryneia pulled her jaw back and began to exert more force. Her gnashing teeth shattered, and blood-soaked debris fell to the ground from her mouth, which had lost its walls.
“I can no longer be blamed. I am the king’s sword and shield!”
Keryneia slammed the Death Immortal into the ground. She squeezed the hilt with both hands and tried to pull it to her chest.
The Crying Serpent, which stood straight up in the sky, didn’t move, but despite the pain she was in, she didn’t give up and didn’t relax.
Meteor frowned at her strange behavior, but then she realized what she was trying to do and opened her eyes.
A large amount of blood gushed from Keryneia’s body. At the same time, she escaped from the Crying Serpent and was on her feet on the ground. There was a large gash from her chest to her left shoulder. The shoulder was damaged so badly, that it hung down as if it was about to be torn to shreds.
“…This is insane.”
Even if it is to be freed from the Crying Serpent, hurting oneself by tearing is an abnormal behavior.
“But I am not one to be intimidated by such a display.”
With a single flash, Meteor swung her arm out as if to scoop it up from beneath her, twisting her wrist around her chest. The Crying Serpent, transforming into a whip-like motion, sliced off Keryneia’s drooping arm. The current Keryneia had certainly become stronger thanks to the Death Immortal. However, she still had a fatal flaw. Without the magic stone, Keryneia was incomplete as a demon.
“But even with or without the magic stone, I would not have been defeated.”
Meteor, who had driven the Crying Serpent into the ground, placed her hands on the hilt and smiled coldly.
“I know the characteristics of the Death Immortal. Even its owner can be eaten by those dangerous Five Demon Emperor Swords.”
Meteor raised a hand and swung it down with a mighty swing, then slammed her hand down on the hilt of the Crying Serpent and pushed it into the ground.
“We fought a thousand years ago. I know that I am safe as long as I keep a certain distance, and I also know that I am no match for it.”
With her right knee and right hand on the ground, Meteor declared.
“The owner of the Death Immortal at the time was eaten right in front of me.”
“Shit, shit, shit!”
Cursing, Keryneia held up the Death Immortal and lunged at Meteor.
She would not give up. Even when she realized that she could not win, she moved forward. She was a warrior who tried to resist despair. To avoid a slash from the lower plane, Meteor left the ground and jumped to the side. As if to say she had read it, Keryneia twisted and drew a sword trace.
But Meteor saw through it and stepped back, and the forelock that touched the edge of the blade was carried by the wind, along with the trajectory of the deadly blade.
With a furious rush, Keryneia slashed, exhaling wildly, never slowing her attack, always keeping a certain distance―and then, as the attack continued to be dodged, Keryneia stopped her hand abruptly.
As if cold water had been poured on her heated head, Keryneia shivered, her lips turning blue.
She realized.
The difference in abilities was overwhelming.
She was always kept at a distance from her.
“It’s my turn.”
Hearing Meteor’s declaration, Keryneia tried to leave the scene.
At that moment, countless sword blades were created in the place where she had been.
“…..Thousands of years ago, thousands of years ago… the past haunts me everywhere. Wherever I go, the past stands in my way!”
Slipping through the tyrannical blades growing from the ground, Keryneia closed the distance.
Pushing aside her fear of death, she risked her life for the Lord she supported.
For the sake of her unyielding love―and it was the same for Meteor.
“I won’t go easy on you.”
Meteor glanced at Keryneia’s left arm as it began to regenerate.
The super healing privilege granted to the Twelve Demon Lords by the Faceless King―they must be cut down to the point where they can no longer be healed. Meteor’s eyes narrowed at the sight of Keryneia pushing through the storm of tyranny. Like a predator waiting for its prey to approach, she waited with her feet on the ground.
“It has come, and I will not let it escape.”
The corner of her mouth dropped as she approached at close range.
The red blade, thrust out with glee, came close to Meteor, but she kept her eyes closed and did not move an inch.
However, just before it touched her forehead, the Death Immortal was thrown into the air with a violent spark.
With her hands still in the air, Keryneia’s face turned pale.
Opening her eyes, Meteor launched a powerful front kick at Keryneia, pushing her away.
“Gnu!”
With her left arm yet to regenerate and her right arm still sticking out, Keryneia did not have the strength to block the powerful blow.
With her lips twisted from the impact that ripped through her intestines, Keryneia took a passive stance, and just before her back landed on the ground, her entire body was pierced by countless blades protruding from the ground.
“Ahh…”
With a stunned look on her face, Keryneia looked up to the sky in a great stance. Her expression was as if she realized that she had been played by Meteor.
The Death Immortal spinning above her fell to the ground, pulled by gravity, and the red blade pierced her chest, leaving her with no way to protect herself.
“N…not yet…finished!”
With only her persistence, she managed to raise her upper body, and after cutting off her legs, shredding the flesh from her belly, and peeling the skin from her back, she slipped out of the sword pile. Pulling out the Death Immortal that had pierced her wounded body, her entire body turned red, and her mouth twisted into a smile.
Meteor’s eyes filled with pity when she saw this.
Huge blades sprouted from the ground as if surrounding Keryneia. As the blades joined one another, they became a great snake, whirling around to strangle their prey and close the distance between them. The semi-spherical mass of blades covered Keryneia’s head, leaving no escape in any direction, and she was so covered in blades that her form was obscured by them.
Meteor’s fist, with her right hand outstretched, signaled the blade to begin shrinking rapidly, and in the blink of an eye, it vanished as it became as small as a glass ball.
“…Has she escaped?”
Meteor muttered with her hand outstretched. She didn’t feel the reaction that had killed her.
“But not for long. The blessing of the Death Immortal will kill her.”
Regeneration was already sealed.
The blood would not stop flowing, her wounds would not heal, and she would die with the realization of her impending death.
It could be a fitting end for the Twelve Demon Lords.
With that in mind, Meteor mounted her horse and chased after Liz.
