Chapter 1036: Black Chain’s Trap.
Sword Maestro shook his head as he replied, "No, he isn’t. He is being extra intense today."
With a chuckle, Martial Will said, "I wonder why he is so intense. What could have made Black Chain so angry? It is a mystery if you ask me."
As it happened, he was the only one who thought something was amusing because no one else was laughing, grinning, smiling, or chuckling.
For some Dao Lords, like Tepid Scholar, Heavenly Eye, and Sword Maestro, their expressions were grave as if a loved one of theirs had just died. As for the other three, they were sharing meaningful glances.
The glances between Immobile Mountain, Green Fire, and Carefree Immortal were all short and brief. Their eyes seemed to meet across space for a brief instant. But in that instant, a lot of information had been transmitted through their eyes.
Tepid Scholar caught them speaking to each other with their eyes, which prompted him to say, "I hope you don’t really believe him. This could be his trap to lure you into making a mistake."
"Of course, we don’t believe him," came the quick reply from Green Fire. "Why would we believe that he will not stop us? We’re not fools, you know?"
Instead of sighing in relief when he heard this, Tepid Scholar’s face became darker, and his grave expression became deeper. He wanted to believe that he was being overly suspicious. Unfortunately, his suspicion was soon confirmed when Carefree Immortal spoke next.
Carefree Immortal said solemnly, "I think we’re asking the wrong question here. I think the question we should ask ourselves is why we shouldn’t believe Black Chain."
"I mean, he only possesses one pathway right now. He is too weak to be a threat to us. So why should we be wary of him?"
This question stuck Tepid Scholar in a vulnerable place. In order not to let himself be injured worse, he became desperate in his response.
Even though he knew it was a bad idea, he still said, "You don’t need to be wary of Black Chains, which is why this trap seems harmless. But consider this. What if Heavenly Eye, Martial Will, Sword Maestro, and I make a move to stop you?"
His words came out slowly, but they were packed with meaning as he said, "Just imagine it. You are in the process of raising your world. But then I strike at a critical moment, causing your world to fail."
"Then your world scatters and is destroyed, wasting your eyes of effort in growing your world. What would you do then?"
Immobile Mountain, with a frown on his face, asked calmly, "Are you threatening us?"
Unwilling to back down, Tepid Scholar replied, "Yes, I am."
His reply made Immobile Mountain start chuckling in amusement. It was the same kind of amusement that only Martial Will was enjoying earlier because only he was chuckling.
No one was in the mood to chuckle. Green Fire and Carefree Immortal’s faces were grave as they glared with hostility at Tepid Scholar and the other three.
"So this is where it has led us," Green Fire said with a tone of derision. "You can’t get your way, so now you’re stopping us from progressing."
Carefree Immortal shook his head and said, "This is exactly how Black Chain used to behave. If he didn’t get his way, no one else could get theirs."
"I always thought he was the greatest enemy standing in our way, but it seems I was wrong. All of you are our enemies," he said as he glanced at Tepid Scholar, Heavenly Eye, Sword Maestro, and Martial Will in turn.
As for Immobile Mountain, he didn’t say anything. He was still chuckling as if everything that was happening was one big joke.
Seeing this naked hostility, Heavenly Eye sent a secret message to Tepid Scholar, saying, "You know this is exactly what Black Chain hoped would happen when he said those words. He wants us to turn on them and wear us down in the conflict. So you’re playing right into his scheme."
Tepid Scholar, sighing in resignation, said, "I know. But just like earlier, even if I know about the trap and bait, it changed nothing. I still have to take the bait. Or do you wish I keep quiet and watch their world advance?"
"No," Heavenly Eye replied. "I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were doing. As long as you know and are not creating enmity without considering the reason, I’m fine with it."
Shaking his head, Tepid Scholar said, "That aside. What are we going to do about Black Chain and his hold on the advancement of the Blessed Heaven World?"
Heavenly Eye couldn’t find a solution to this question no matter how she thought about it. And she had thought about it seriously for a long time now.
Even before Black Chain made a bid for enslavement avatar, she had thought about the consequences of the Dao Lord of the Four Directions Sect regaining control of the Enslavement Pathway. This possibility that he would take out his anger on them was considered extensively back then before it happened.
The solution she came up with to stop Black Chain was to pool her wealth with Tepid Scholar so that they could outbid Black Chain and win the enslavement avatar. Unfortunately, neither of them was willing to make such a sacrifice for a pathway they couldn’t use.
The Enslavement Pathway wasn’t compatible with either of them. So if they had spent all of that money to stop Black Chain, the best they would get out of it was killing the avatar and freeing the will of the Blessed Heaven World.
In their selfish and self-centered opinion, spending that much money on freeing the will of the Blessed Heaven World was not worth it. Especially since they were still hoping to spend their money on buying the Supreme Metacs of the Formation Pathway, the Truth Pathway, and the Illusion Pathway from the dragon.
