Chapter 1385: Pros And Cons Of An Alliance.
Shaking his head, Martial Will chuckled once more and said, "Sentiments aside. The fact remains that our alliance isn’t wrong."
"Our alliance isn’t wrong because the enemy it was created to defeat exists, and it is true that we need to ally with each other to defeat it. With this kind of situation, questioning ourselves and being divided is not a good idea."
"It is especially a bad idea since it is obvious that Ragnarok told us this secret to divide us. It will be extremely stupid of us to fall for it."
Wandering Thief took a while longer to find what to say. When he could finally speak, he said, "I don’t know what to say."
Martial Will shrugged and said, "I mean, what’s the worst that can happen if I trust you?"
"You will betray me, and I will die. That’s the same outcome Ragnarok and the Gemini race have in store for me, so it is nothing new."
"I know I’m strong and all, but I don’t think I can take on the Gemini race on my own. I know that if I am to survive, I must have allies to fight with. So trusting you is the only viable option here."
"You could also leave my brothers and me out of the alliance. You can form a more secure alliance with the other seven Dao Lords," Wandering Thief said, offering an alternative.
Upon hearing this, Martial Will said, "First of all, I don’t trust Black Chain, Heavenly Eye, and Tepid Scholar."
"Even with an oath, I trust them less than I trust you without an oath. So it makes no difference to me allying with you."
"Secondly, leaving you out of the alliance will weaken us and reduce our chances of success. It is obviously a bad idea to leave out three fighters with Cosmic Daos when we’re fighting against a behemoth like the Gemini race."
"Without Time Traveler and his Time Loop Supreme Metac, we wouldn’t have as much information as we do now about Ragnarok and the Gemini race. Clearly, without you three, we would be going into this as blind as bats and much weaker. That’s just stupid."
"Thirdly, if I don’t trust you because of the Freedom Supreme Metac, I can’t trust anyone else I make oaths with. Who knows if you can break other people’s oaths too? With that kind of possibility on our hands, how can any alliance formed on oaths be trustworthy?"
"I see," Wandering Thief said, having had time to come to terms with what was going on.
"You make a lot of sense. I am sorry that I doubted you, and I’m thankful that you trust me."
"Thank me by helping me bring Ragnarok down," Martial Will said, then turned to leave once more.
This time, Wandering Thief didn’t call him back. He watched Martial Will leave while sorting his thoughts.
"It seems I was overthinking it. Martial Will wasn’t wrong. We lost because we couldn’t make the needed sacrifice to win."
"But if we’re to form a trustworthy alliance to win, then being soft and mentally weak, as he put it, is the right choice. Since an alliance is what we need now, then we are doing what we need to do to win."
There was also the possibility that he was wrong and what they needed for victory was to sacrifice each other to create one superior fighter. He wasn’t so set in his ways that his possibility didn’t cross his mind.
But he didn’t have time to dwell on this possibility for long because more Dao Lords reached out to him one after the other, demanding to know whether the Freedom Supreme Metac was as insidious as Ragnarok claimed.
He dealt with the Dao Lords as they came, telling them the truth. Many of them were understandably angry. They weren’t as amiable as Martial Will, so the conversation didn’t go well. But one thing stood out to him amidst this storm.
The alliance had ten Dao Lords, including him. If Ragnarok had told the others about the Freedom Supreme Metac, nine Dao Lords should have come to him to complain. But only eight Dao Lords showed up.
He noticed that one Dao Lord didn’t show up because he waited for them, but they didn’t reach out to him. Since the matter was already exposed, he decided to contact them and clear the air.
He sent a message saying, "Green Fire, I have something to tell you."
"Is this about the Freedom Supreme Metac?" she asked nonchalantly.
Hearing this, he sighed and said, "I guess one of them told you."
"I didn’t want you to find out like this. I wanted to tell you myself, and I would have come earlier, but I was delayed because I was waiting for you to come to me to complain."
"None of them told me. Ragnarok told me. He told me well before our meeting," she said.
"Why didn’t you come to me to confirm or complain?" Wandering Thief asked, confused. "Did you not believe him?"
She chuckled as she replied, "Oh, I believed him."
"Then why?" he asked again.
In response, she shrugged and said, "I just didn’t care if you could break oaths or not."
Before he could ask why she was saying something so nonsensical, she explained, "I don’t know why, but I feel like you’re trustworthy."
"It is absurd, right? I don’t know you that well. But when you contacted me and told me that we needed to ally to fight the Gemini, I immediately believed you."
"And when you said that my previous version in the other timelines told Time Traveler that, as long as you ask to ally with you by speaking backward, I would believe you, I knew that I could trust you."
Wandering Thief relaxed upon hearing this. He became relaxed enough to chuckle and say, "I guess speaking backward must mean a lot to you. I should have known that you were weird when I learned that was the requirement to gain your trust."
