Moments later, Spirit King circled in place a few times, and an uneasy glint flickered faintly in its eyes.

Marquis Xuanping had a vague idea. There must be another snowstorm ahead. Before, whenever a snowstorm arose, Spirit King would always find a detour and continue leading the way. Never once had it shown such apprehension.

This time, the blizzard must be far more severe than anything they had encountered before.

Spirit King let out a low, uneasy growl and took a few steps back.

The entire wolf pack sensed the signal from their alpha and began to stir restlessly in unison.

In the end, Spirit King turned around and led the wolves back in retreat.

With the ice path broken, they could no longer press straight ahead, so they would circle eastward instead.

At all costs, they could not continue charging in the direction of Great Yan.

They were already halfway through the journey, and it had taken them great effort to reach this point. If they were forced to turn back now and return to Hidden Night Island, all their efforts would be in vain.

A gut feeling told Marquis Xuanping that this was his one and only chance, his last possible crossing of the icefield. If he missed it, then for the rest of this bitter winter, he would never again make it out of the frozen lands.

“Remember this, if Spirit King refuses to lead the way any further, it means the storm is unavoidable. Under no circumstances should you force your way through.”

Marquis Xuanping’s gaze darkened slightly as Chang Ying’s words of warning flashed through his mind.

Marquis Xuanping’s eyes grew somber at the thought.

Qing’er was still waiting for him to bring back the purple herb. Even if it meant crossing blades and fire, even if it meant descending into hell itself, he had to make it through!

His gaze fell on the icefield wolves dashing ahead, and a moment later, he drew his long blade.

Go back now, icefield wolves. Your mission is complete.

From here on out, I’ll walk the path alone.

With a swift motion of his blade, he severed all the reins binding the wolves to the snow carriage.

Unburdened, the wolf pack instantly shot off into the distance like arrows.

Spirit King skidded to a halt just in time, then turned back to look at Marquis Xuanping.

A blizzard was coming. This human would die.

It sensed kindness and sincerity from this man, but its duty was to ensure that its pack lived.

Marquis Xuanping grabbed the pack basket off the snow carriage, and without hesitation, he charged straight into the blizzard that loomed ahead.

……

Marquis Xuanping no longer remembered how many days he had been trudging through the blizzard. His face had long since gone numb, his mouth could no longer close, and his hands and feet were frozen stiff, his entire body rigid like a corpse.

He moved forward step by step like a walking dead man, dragging himself across the endless white wasteland.

Suddenly, his knees buckled, and he staggered, falling with one leg hitting the ground hard.

With a metallic ‘clang’, his long blade stabbed into the solid ice, becoming the only support keeping his collapsing body upright.

He could not fall here.

Qing’er was still waiting for him.

He had to make it back.

His palm, cracked open by the cold, pressed against the ice, leaving behind a strikingly vivid, bloody handprint.

His body heat continued to slip away, and he could find no shelter from the wind or snow.

He seemed to have lost his way, and he didn’t even know how much farther he had left to go.

At last, his strength gave out entirely, and he collapsed face-first onto the cold, hard ice.

When Marquis Xuanping opened his eyes again, the blood that had trickled down from his forehead had already dried.

He forced his nearly petrified body to move, and with great effort, he climbed back to his feet, picked up the long blade lying on the ice, and used it as a walking stick to continue his journey toward his goal.

But eventually, even his remaining strength was drained. When a glacier collapsed in front of him, he no longer had the energy to run.

His first instinct wasn’t to save himself, but to grab the pack on his back and hurl it away.

With a deafening crash, his entire body was buried beneath the glacier!

The pack burst open, spilling its contents with a loud clatter. The leather wrapping around the small box was sliced apart by sharp shards of ice.

A gust of wind swept past.

Marquis Xuanping’s expression changed drastically. His voice was hoarse and barely audible, “No——”

Splash!

The leather covering was blown open, and the small box tumbled into the cracked ice chasm.

The box floated along the water beneath the ice, slowly drifting away.

An overwhelming grief surged in Marquis Xuanping’s chest. He lifted his hands and pushed desperately against the glacier crushing down on him.

But his dantian was already damaged, he couldn’t summon a single ounce of internal force.

His fingers clawed at the ice until they were a bloody mess, yet the glacier over him did not budge in the slightest.

“Don’t go... don’t go…”

He watched helplessly as the little box beneath the ice floated farther and farther away, the blood vessels in his eyes bursting one by one in anxious agony.

That wasn’t just a small box drifting away beneath the ice, it was his son’s life!

“Ahhhrrg——”

He let out a roar of wrath and anguish, summoning what remained of his life force to shove against the glacier pinning him down.

Boom!

By pushing his side of the glacier, he inadvertently increased the pressure on the other side, causing the ice on the lake’s surface to crack open!

A chain of broken ice shards fell into the chasm and were carried by the current, colliding with the small box and pushing it even farther away.

If this continued, he would lose it——

Marquis Xuanping stared at the bleak, gray sky above, feeling a deep and consuming despair.

He wasn’t afraid to die.

He only feared that if he died, no one would be able to bring the purple herb back…

Why did it have to be this way?

Twenty years ago, he had failed to save Qing’er. Was he truly going to fail again this time?

He turned his head, trying to spot the little box beneath the ice, but just then, through the raging wind and snow, he caught a glimpse of a tall figure.

Was it an illusion?

How could there possibly be someone… here?

The figure took one step after another, slowly approaching him.

It was a man wrapped tightly in thick hides, wearing a cloak of fox fur. The hood of the cloak covered his face.

At his waist hung a long sword that emanated an intense chill, perfectly complementing the cold and solitary aura that surrounded him.

By his side walked an icefield wolf, identical in appearance to Spirit King.

As the man drew closer, Marquis Xuanping finally recognized him.

“Long Yi?”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
