Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Marquis Xuanping had not anticipated running into Long Yi here at all. Long Yi was still wearing the same mask he had put on upon entering the Princess Mansion, one that he had hardly taken off since.

——Perhaps he had changed it for a new one at some point, but it was always the same style.

How strange. Wasn’t Long Yi supposed to have gone northeast with Ah Heng to negotiate peace with the State of Chen?

When he left Quyang in search of medicine, Xiao Heng had not yet arrived at the northwestern border, so naturally, he had no idea that Long Yi had already parted ways with Xiao Heng.

Instinctively, he looked past Long Yi, trying to see who might be behind him.

But there was nothing but endless snow and wind. There was no sign of another figure in sight.

That made things even stranger. Long Yi had come here alone?

And also, there was something different about Long Yi’s presence, it wasn’t quite the same as before.

Marquis Xuanping’s mind was already so numb from the cold that it could hardly function anymore; being able to piece together even this much was already the limit of his capacity.

Soon enough, he remembered what was truly important.

He opened his mouth, voice hoarse and barely recognizable, but all his words were instantly swallowed by the howling wind and snow.

He wasn’t sure if Long Yi had recognized him. After all, battered by the blizzard for so many days, he now looked so haggard and disheveled that even he might not recognize himself.

Long Yi stood atop a solid sheet of ice, not moving toward him right away.

Beside him, the icefield wolf seemed to sense something too as it stood at the edge of the ice, sniffing at a faint crack that snaked beneath the surface.

They could not go forward.

Not even a single step.

Crack!

Marquis Xuanping also heard the splitting sound beneath him, the ice sheet was about to give way under the glacier’s weight. It wouldn’t be long before he and the glacier sank together into the freezing water below.

Everything from the waist down had already gone numb under the glacier’s crushing pressure. He tilted his head back and drew a few heavy breaths, forcing himself to muster a little strength.

He stopped struggling, doing everything he could to keep the glacier and the ice sheet beneath him in a precarious balance.

“Long Yi.” He finally managed to call out with a trace of strength in his voice, “Why are you here? Are you alone?”

“Mm.” Long Yi made a soft sound in response, an answer to his second question, at least.

He had been nearby, and hearing Marquis Xuanping’s voice, he had come to investigate.

Marquis Xuanping let out a weak “oh,” but in the next moment, a flicker ran through his eyes.

Wait. Did Long Yi just… respond?

Did he speak?

Marquis Xuanping had already met Empress Dowager Zhuang and Gu Jiao, and from them, he had learned some things about Long Yi. He knew now that Long Yi wasn’t actually a Dragon Shadow Guard left behind by the late Emperor for Qin Fengwen.

He had stumbled into this world with no memory.

But he had believed himself to be a Dragon Shadow Guard and had lost the ability to speak as a result.

Long Yi’s gaze rested on the glacier pressing down on Marquis Xuanping, as if he were silently calculating how best to extract him from beneath it.

He removed the leather glove from his right hand, and those well-defined fingers gripped the hilt of the sword at his waist.

Marquis Xuanping understood what he was about to do; he was going to split the glacier with a single strike, then use his qinggong to pull him to safety.

With Long Yi’s abilities, such a feat was certainly possible.

But the force from that blow would be too great. It would send a surge of water rushing through the ice, shattering it into countless fragments, and the little box would be swept away for good.

He didn’t have the time to make another trip back to Hidden Night Island.

“Long Yi… forget about me… go get the small box…”

Long Yi’s gaze swept across the area.

He spotted a small box drifting slowly beneath the ice. Its body was sealed in a coat of red wax, making it highly conspicuous.

To grab that box, he would have to break through the ice. But the ice here was already dangerously unstable. Once broken, the glacier would crush Marquis Xuanping into the water, and even Long Yi wouldn’t be able to save him.

There was no hesitation or fear in Marquis Xuanping’s eyes. He smiled faintly and said, “Give the small box… to JiaoJiao… she’ll know what to do…”

He was neither Long Yi’s master nor his companion.

Long Yi had every right to refuse his request.

“Long Yi.” He looked at Long Yi as he spoke.

Proud as he was, Marquis Xuanping had never begged anyone for anything in his life.

Yet, the tone in his voice now was not one of command either.

All of a sudden, he gave a bitter laugh at himself and said, “Anyway, your master doesn’t like me. Whether I live or die doesn’t matter. What’s inside that box is her son’s medicine. If the boy’s gone… then your master ought to feel grief.”

……

In the eleventh month, Quyang lay buried beneath a thick blanket of snow.

It had been several days since Xiao Heng and Shangguan Qing had departed.

“It’s already mid-month.” Gu Jiao said.

Marquis Xuanping had set out early in the morning on the sixteenth of the tenth month. It had been nearly a month now, and there was no telling whether he had managed to obtain the purple herb.

Though Shangguan Qing had given up waiting for the antidote, Gu Jiao had not. In her heart, she was still calculating the final deadline.

Staring at the route map she had drawn, she sighed and said, “If we still don’t get the antidote tonight, we really won’t make it in time.”

That night, Marquis Xuanping did not return.

At dawn, as always, Gu Jiao woke early. She planned to feed the Black Wind King first, then head to the infirmary camp to make her rounds. But just as she stepped out of bed, her right foot bumped into something.

Looking down, she saw a small box sealed with red wax.

A delicate layer of frost had formed atop the wax.

“Who left this here? I’m sure I didn’t see this box last night. Did someone come in during the night?”

A flurry of questions ran through Gu Jiao’s mind.

She picked up the small box, and underneath it, she spotted a familiar charcoal pencil.

“Long Yi…”

It was Long Yi. He had come!

He was the one who left the box here!

Cradling the small box in her arms, Gu Jiao stepped out of the tent and ran right into Advisor Hu, who had come to deliver hot water.

“Oh heavens!”

Advisor Hu quickly tried to back away, but unfortunately, there wasn’t room.

Just as they were about to collide, Gu Jiao swiftly twisted her body aside. Advisor Hu stumbled a few steps but managed to regain his balance.

Turning to look at Gu Jiao, who had suddenly burst out of the tent, he asked with lingering concern, “My Lord, is something urgent going on?”

“Did you see someone?”

“Well… there are people all around here…”

“This tall.” Gu Jiao gestured, “Wearing a mask, with a long sword at his waist.”

Advisor Hu shook his head. “No, are you referring to an assassin?”

With a mask, a sword, and that towering build. Just the thought of it sent chills down his spine.

“Forget it. He didn’t even wake me up. Clearly, he didn’t want to alert anyone.” Gu Jiao lowered her gaze and turned back toward the tent, still holding the small box.

Advisor Hu scratched his head and muttered, “Why do I feel like my Lord seems a bit down?”

Gu Jiao knelt beside her small desk and placed the box and the charcoal pencil from the carpet onto the table. Only then did she notice that the top of the small box was sealed under a thin layer of ice that encased a piece of paper.

She gently cracked the ice and carefully retrieved the paper, then slowly unfurled it on the tabletop.

It was a drawing made with a charcoal pen.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
