After the hour of the zishi (11pm - 1am) had passed, Marquis Xuanping and Chang Jing returned to the estate.

The enemies who had been stalking him for several days were all slain by Chang Jing, none escaped.

Indeed, having Chang Jing to wield was truly convenient.

“Hm? Why are you all still up? Don’t you ever sleep?”

As soon as he entered the courtyard, Marquis Xuanping caught sight of his two sons seated in the main hall, conversing by candlelight.

Xiao Heng glanced at Chang Jing, then recounted what had happened with Li Jiangping.

Marquis Xuanping turned to look at Chang Jing.

Chang Jing was greatly surprised. If anyone else had said this, he never would have believed it, but since it came from Xiao Heng’s mouth, he could only fall silent.

Marquis Xuanping gave a cold snort and sneered, “Just by looking, you can tell he’s no good.”

Chang Jing whispered a protest, “Uncle Li is kind, he has always taken care of me and my seven elder sisters. Whenever I got into trouble, he was the one who pleaded for me.”

Marquis Xuanping gave him a strange glance. “Even without him pleading, would your father really have the heart to punish you?”

Chang Jing was left speechless.

The truth was plain, and Marquis Xuanping would never defend someone who had stolen his daughter-in-law’s medicine chest. “So that Li Jiangping was only pretending all along, merely currying favor with you children.”

Chang Jing weakly argued again, “But it was also Uncle Li who persuaded my father to allow me to come here with a marriage proposal.”

Xiao Heng explained to Chang Jing, “If he hadn’t persuaded your father, he couldn’t have come with you to the State of Zhao. His purpose was very clear; it was JiaoJiao’s medicine chest.”

Chang Jing muttered in a low voice, making one final struggle, “It was also Uncle Li who discovered Sword Lodge.”

Xiao Heng sighed. “He had no choice but to discover it. First, he needed to earn enough merit to secure your father’s trust. Second, the rules of Hidden Night Sect are strict. He could never leave the island on his own. He had to use the excuse of regularly monitoring Sword Lodge in order to conceal his ties with them.”

“Is that so?” Deep down, Chang Jing already understood. Whether or not Uncle Li was a spy from Sword Lodge, from the moment he stole Gu Jiao’s medicine chest, at least then, he was no longer Elder Li of Hidden Night Sect.

Hidden Night Sect would never have ordered him to do such a thing.

Shangguan Qing asked suspiciously, “But I still don’t get it. Why would they want to steal JiaoJiao’s medicine chest?”

“Is it because there are many rare herbs inside?” Shangguan Qing muttered to himself, then answered himself, “Or maybe because the chest is impervious to blades and guns, even my firelance can’t break it, and they want to take it back, split it apart, and forge armor from it?”

Xiao Heng shook his head, not explaining to those in the hall the true secret of the little medicine chest.

Inside were endless medicinal supplies, and it could even connect to an operating room in another space. It was without doubt a priceless treasure.

But that raised another question.

What use would Sword Lodge have for it?

They were Sword Lodge, not Medicine Cottage.

Could it be that from now on, they would abandon sword training and all become physicians?

Or perhaps someone among them had contracted an incurable illness, and by chance the little medicine chest contained the remedy?

But this possibility could also be dismissed. Given Li Jiangping’s relationship with Chang Jing, if he had simply asked, no matter what medicine it was, Gu Jiao would have been willing to give it. There was no need to steal the chest at such great risk.

Marquis Xuanping, for his part, had no interest in probing into whether Gu Jiao’s medicine chest concealed anything strange. The medicine chest was hers, and he did not pry into others’ secrets. Besides, whatever was inside, it was no reason for Sword Lodge to covet it.

The people of Sword Lodge truly deserved to die.

Something occurred to Xiao Heng, and he asked Chang Jing, “The ones who died were the Sect Leader of Sword Lodge and his wife… who identified those corpses?”

“Uncle Li… Li Jiangping.” Chang Jing corrected himself. “Only he had been secretly observing Sword Lodge, and only he knew who was who on the island. So when he said those bodies belonged to them, both my father and I believed him.”

Xiao Heng said, “It seems the true Sect Leader of Sword Lodge did not die.”

Shangguan Qing asked, “Then did Long Yi actually go to the island or not?”

Xiao Heng shook his head. “It’s impossible to say now. Perhaps he went and killed many of their disciples, and some escaped. Or perhaps he hadn’t even had the chance to act before Hidden Night Sect landed on the island, and that so-called massacre was Sword Lodge’s own ruse to deceive Hidden Night Sect.”

Shangguan Qing nodded. “Li Jiangping knew the Hidden Night Sect was coming to destroy Sword Lodge, so he tipped them off. Sword Lodge then staged a false annihilation. Sounds plausible enough.”

Xiao Heng thought it over and said, “It’s very likely Long Yi did go. Otherwise, with Sword Lodge’s strength, there would have been no need for them to go so far just to avoid the Hidden Night Sect.”

Chang Jing declared solemnly, “Our Hidden Night Sect is very powerful!”

Xiao Heng said, “Of course you are formidable, but with Li Jiangping serving as an inside man, if Sword Lodge had set up an ambush on the island and tricked you into falling into it, it wouldn’t have been a difficult thing at all.”

Chang Jing fell silent.

Indeed.

They had trusted Uncle Li too much.

It was Uncle Li who had led the way from the moment they set foot on the island. If he had deliberately guided them into traps and mechanisms, they would likely have already suffered heavy casualties.

Yet Chang Jing still couldn’t understand one thing. “But Uncle Li… why didn’t Li Jiangping make a move? Even if we suffered some losses on Sword Lodge Island, no one would have suspected him. He could have completely taken the chance to weaken Hidden Night Island’s strength.”

Xiao Heng looked at him seriously and said, “And what if you were injured? If you couldn’t come to the State of Zhao to propose marriage, then he would have no way to get close to JiaoJiao.”

Chang Jing replied, “Oh.”

At that, the last shred of hope in Chang Jing’s heart was extinguished.

Li Jiangping was indeed nothing more than a spy through and through.

There were still some doubts left, but Xiao Heng would have to return and sort out his thoughts slowly.

“That chest really is all right, isn’t it?” Shangguan Qing was still worrying about the little medicine chest. After all, it was something that even a barrage of firelance couldn’t destroy, and one must know that even the battle armor on Gu Jiao’s body could not withstand the power of those guns.

Xiao Heng said firmly, “It’s fine. They won’t be able to steal it.”

……

On the silent long street, a carriage sped swiftly forward.

As soon as Li Jiangping got inside, he immediately pushed the little medicine chest beneath the seat and held it tightly between his feet so that the jolts of the carriage wouldn’t send it rolling out.

The swordsman who had rescued him handed him a pill for treating internal injuries.

He tilted his head back and swallowed it, then circulated his qi through a small cycle, exhaled deeply, and said with a sense of barely escaping death, “That was far too close just now! What sort of weapon was that fellow holding? It nearly blew me to bits!”

“That’s called a firelance.” The swordsman replied, then hesitated before adding, “But back at Ghost Mountain, the firelance did not have such power.”

That swordsman hadn’t participated in the battle at Ghost Mountain, but Elder Lu and the others had sent letters back to Sword Lodge describing every detail of the fighting.

Li Jiangping sighed. “My identity is exposed. From now on, I can never return to the Hidden Night Sect.”

At this, Li Jiangping’s anger flared. Twenty years of lying low, deceiving an entire island full of people, only to end up defeated in the hands of a wet-behind-the-ears youngster!

The swordsman said, “It’s no matter. You obtained the medicine chest, and the mission is accomplished. You need never go back to the Hidden Night Sect again.”

Li Jiangping said with emotion, “I truly never expected that the thing the Sect Leader was searching for would end up in the hands of a mere little girl.”

The swordsman also found it astonishing. “Indeed, we had always thought that item was in the Hidden Night Sect, which made you waste twenty years searching Hidden Night Island in vain.”

Li Jiangping smiled faintly. “Not entirely in vain. If I hadn’t been lying low on Hidden Night Island, I never would have had the chance to come with Chang Jing to the State of Zhao.”

The swordsman said, “That’s true.”

Li Jiangping furrowed his brow. “Still, I have one doubt. How did the Sect Leader know that the medicine chest was in the hands of Duke An’s adopted daughter?”

The swordsman explained, “A female physician from the State of Chen, surnamed Mu, told the Han Family of the State of Yan. The Han Family passed the word on to Gongsun Yu. Our people happened to be nearby and overheard it. Gongsun Yu had no interest in this object, which ended up working to our advantage.”

Li Jiangping suddenly understood. “So that’s how it was.”

The swordsman gave a faint smile and said, “Since Chang Jing happens to be connected by marriage to Duke An’s adopted daughter, this must be Heaven’s will, that our Sword Lodge should obtain it.”

As he spoke, he turned to Li Jiangping. “You have rendered great service this time. The Sect Leader will certainly reward you handsomely.”

Li Jiangping could not suppress his smile. He lowered his head to pick up the little medicine chest from the floor, and then something unbelievable happened.

“The medicine chest!”

His face changed drastically.

The swordsman frowned. “Didn’t you just now put it under the seat?”

“Yes! I placed it right here!” Li Jiangping crouched down, not only searching beneath his own seat but also checking every corner inside the carriage.

Yet the little medicine chest was simply gone!

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
