Chapter 773: The Famous Evalyn
Chapter 773: The Famous Evalyn
Nolan listened to their conversation calmly.
"I heard that the success of the attack was largely due to someone named Evalyn."
"Evalyn? Who is she? Is she a famous warrior from the Central Continent?"
"Wrong! According to the rumors, she’s a powerful warrior who was previously unknown. However, Princess Roseline discovered her and invited her to join the army. Now, that woman dominates the battlefield and has successfully conquered the city of Inferos! The princess’s luck is truly extraordinary to have recruited such a powerful warrior into the ranks of the human army!"
Nolan chuckled softly when he heard Evalyn’s name.
’Just as I thought, that woman was destined to shine in this war,’ he muttered.
In his opinion, Evalyn was exceptionally strong and talented. Her swordsmanship might still be somewhat unrefined, but it was only a matter of time before her skills fully matured.
However, she did have one weakness—a lack of opportunities to develop her abilities.
Because she had spent most of her life within the Lionheart family estate, Evalyn had never truly been able to realize her full potential.
For someone like her, the battlefield was the ideal place to hone her skills and grow stronger.
That was why Nolan had no objections to her joining the war against the demon race.
After all, throwing herself into battle would only help her unlock her full potential.
"Brother Nolan," Chloe called softly. "Are they talking about the war between humanity and the demon race?"
Nolan was slightly surprised. Although the conversation had been quiet, the girl had somehow managed to overhear it.
But he had no intention of hiding the truth and simply nodded.
"That’s right. Humanity and the demon race are currently engaged in a fierce war. Why? Does it make you uncomfortable?"
Chloe swallowed her food and nodded weakly.
"I’m a demon. Is it really okay for me to live among humans?"
Her gaze swept across the room. Everything felt different, yet strangely familiar.
The most distinctive trait of the demon race was their appearance.
Most demons possessed the faces of animals or monsters while retaining human-like bodies.
Fortunately, Chloe was different. She looked almost exactly like an ordinary human.
The only noticeable differences were her slightly pale skin and the two small horns protruding from her head.
Nolan had concealed those horns with magic, making her appearance nearly indistinguishable from that of a normal human.
"Pfft! What are you talking about, little girl?" Nolan chuckled, gently pinching her nose. "It’s true that you’re a member of the demon race, but that has nothing to do with this war. Besides, after everything they’ve done to you, you don’t owe them anything. You’re no longer one of them. And I’m sure you’ll find your place among humans. Trust me, humans aren’t that cruel."
What he said was partly true and partly a lie.
In general, humans tended to accept those who were similar to themselves. It was easier for them to understand and embrace their own kind.
However, that wasn’t the case in the future. Humans had gradually begun to accept other races, such as elves, dragons, and many others.
Demons, however, were an exception. The countless evils they had committed made it nearly impossible for humans to accept them.
Still, Nolan wasn’t too worried. Chloe looked almost entirely human, and her demonic traits had been concealed with magic.
Unless he or Chloe herself dispelled the spell, she would appear to be an ordinary human. As a result, she should be able to avoid most forms of discrimination.
Chloe let out a long sigh. She trusted Nolan completely, and her fears slowly began to fade.
After they finished eating, Nolan paid the bill and walked out of the tavern.
Picking Chloe up in his arms, he said, "Night will be falling soon. Let’s find a place to stay for the night. Tomorrow, we’ll continue our journey."
Nolan already had long-term plans for Chloe. One of them was to train her in magic.
He could sense the extraordinary potential she possessed, especially when it came to spatial magic.
That was also one of the reasons he had traveled deep into demon territory to find her.
Chloe said nothing. She wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
"I’ll go wherever you go, Brother."
Nolan smiled and headed toward an inn not far away.
...
Nighttime...
About ten kilometers from the city of Valthoria, a large camp had been established.
The camp belonged to the human army led by Evalyn.
The soldiers had yet to retire for the night, as they were busy celebrating their recent victory.
"Hahaha! Congratulations on our victory!" General Lucien exclaimed with a hearty laugh.
"Congratulations on our victory!" the soldiers cheered in unison.
They raised their mugs of beer, took a drink together, and burst into laughter.
"Everyone!" Lucien called out with a wide grin, his face flushed from the alcohol.
The soldiers immediately turned their attention to him.
"Our victory today is not solely the result of our own efforts but also because of one person."
He pointed toward Evalyn, who was sitting on a boulder near the campfire.
"Express your gratitude to Warrior Evalyn! Without her, we would never have achieved so much!"
The soldiers quickly rose to their feet and bowed their heads toward her.
"Thank you for your efforts and dedication, Warrior Evalyn!" they shouted in unison.
Faced with their sudden enthusiasm, Evalyn was slightly taken aback. She smiled awkwardly and waved her hand.
"What are you talking about? This victory belongs to all of us, not just me. Lift your heads. You are warriors. There is no need to bow before me."
Her humble words touched the soldiers and filled them with pride.
If it had been anyone else, they would have been basking in the glory of their achievements, especially after contributing so much to the campaign.
But Evalyn was different, and that only made the soldiers respect her even more.
’What an extraordinary young woman,’ Lucien and several other generals praised in unison.
Not far away, Lucas observed everything with a calm expression.
His gaze was fixed on Evalyn, and a hint of calculation flickered in his eyes.
"The power of the Divine Sword Luminus comes from her," he muttered. "But how is that possible? It should be impossible."
Even so, the feeling he had sensed earlier couldn’t be mistaken.
He needed to confirm it for himself.
After the celebration ended, the soldiers returned to their respective camps.
Tomorrow, they would launch an assault on the city of Valthoria and open a path into the heart of the demon race’s territory.
Evalyn rose to her feet and stretched her stiff body.
Looking up at the night sky, she muttered, "The assault on Inferos went perfectly. Next is Valthoria. We have to take it."
She clenched her fists tightly. The previous battle had ignited something deep within her.
For the first time, she felt as though she truly belonged on the battlefield.
Just as she was about to leave, a voice called out from behind her.
"Evalyn, wait a moment. There’s something I want to ask you."
