Chapter 824: The Unsolvable Paradox
Chapter 824: The Unsolvable Paradox
Sylvia was stunned at the subject Nolan brought up. To be honest, the reason she had called him here was to discuss that very matter.
A few days ago, for some inexplicable reason, a strange memory had resurfaced in her mind.
It was a memory of a mysterious and handsome man, but she couldn’t remember his face clearly at all.
But as time passed, his features gradually sharpened. To her horror the man turned out to be Nolan.
It would be a lie to say she wasn’t surprised. She was over a thousand years old, while the Nolan standing before her was merely a young man who had only recently reached adulthood.
How could he possibly appear in her childhood memories?
Unfortunately, no matter how much she tried to deny it, the memory felt all too real.
What made it even stranger was that her memories from before that incident were hazy and fragmented. She had even forgotten what her Master, the Sage Oracle, looked like.
Nolan gave a faint smile and explained, "Your memory isn’t wrong. I really did appear a thousand years ago."
Hearing that, Sylvia’s shock deepened. Her body trembled slightly as confusion spread across her face.
"How is that possible? It doesn’t make any sense."
Nolan chuckled softly. Taking a sip of his tea, he replied, "Do you believe in time travel?"
"Time travel?" Sylvia was dumbfounded. "N-No, I don’t."
But in the next moment, she seemed to realize something. The eyes hidden behind her blindfold widened.
"Wait... Don’t tell me you..."
Before she could finish, Nolan cut her off.
"Yes, that’s right. I’ve traveled through time."
The atmosphere fell silent. The only sound was the gentle breeze drifting in from the south.
Sylvia opened and closed her mouth several times, as though she wanted to say something but didn’t know where to begin.
Nolan wasn’t in a hurry to explain. To be honest, he had once believed time travel was impossible as well. That was, until he experienced it himself.
It took Sylvia a long while to recover from her shock. She took a deep breath before lifting her teacup and taking a sip.
When she finally calmed down, she spoke in a softer voice.
"It’s still hard for me to wrap my head around all of this. Can you explain it a bit more?"
Nolan didn’t mind and began filling in the gaps.
Sylvia listened quietly.
His explanation wasn’t very long. He only talked about what happened when he met Sylvia.
As for the war and everything else, he didn’t think those details were important right now.
"That’s basically it," Nolan said with a shrug.
Sylvia remained silent, taking an occasional sip of her tea. Her expression showed that she was still trying to process everything she’d just heard.
"It’s hard to believe something like that actually happened," she murmured with a long sigh.
So the strange memory had been connected to Nolan’s journey through time.
Sylvia began to question her understanding of reality.
Was the past she remembered truly real?
After all, Nolan had never existed in her memories before. Yet because of his time travel, he had now become a part of her history.
Noticing her unease, Nolan spoke calmly.
"Don’t be confused or anxious. The truth is, the present era exists because of my intervention—and Evalyn’s as well. I know it sounds unbelievable, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s true."
Over the past few days, Nolan had spent a lot of time thinking about everything that had happened.
In the end, he came to one conclusion: the whole thing was a paradox with no real answer.
From the very beginning, the defeat of the Demon Emperor Zerathos and his forces hadn’t been accomplished by Rei and Lucas alone.
It had only been possible because Evalyn stepped in and changed the course of events.
No, Nolan himself had played a crucial role as well.
The Demon Emperor Zerathos was far too powerful—stronger than any creature that had existed a thousand years ago.
It was only because Nolan had confronted him, defeated him, and sealed away most of his power that Evalyn, Rei, Lucas, and the allied forces were ultimately able to bring him down.
In other words, the time travel undertaken by Nolan and Evalyn had to happen. Without it, the history of their era would have had no foundation upon which to exist.
Then why was there no mention of Nolan and Evalyn in the historical records?
Wasn’t the answer obvious?
Neither Nolan nor Evalyn belonged to that era. They were outsiders to the timeline a thousand years ago. As a result, their existence was erased from everyone’s memories and from the historical records of that age.
Confusing? Absolutely.
Yet that was the reality.
From the very beginning, every event had been interconnected, and yet they also seemed to contradict one another.
The only outcome would be a paradox, and neither the gods nor the world itself would ever allow such a thing to happen.
Sylvia clutched her head. It was still difficult for her to accept that reality. Yet deep down, she knew Nolan was telling the truth.
"I understand."
Sylvia took a deep breath and let it out. She repeated the motion three times before straightening her back and meeting Nolan’s gaze.
"Then, can you answer my question, Nolan Lorian?"
Nolan nodded.
Sylvia’s expression turned serious.
"Who are you, exactly? And how were you able to stop the Demon Emperor’s invasion?"
With her memories, she knew that the era of the Demon Emperor Zerathos was no joke.
That monster possessed power beyond any being that had ever existed. The only ones who might have been able to rival him were the Seven Singularities, who emerged only after the Demon Emperor’s downfall.
But Nolan had just said that history had unfolded the way it did because of his intervention.
That left only one possibility—Nolan was responsible for the Demon Emperor’s defeat, whether directly or indirectly.
Nolan merely smiled at her question.
"Are you sure you want me to answer that?" he asked playfully.
"Of course! Otherwise, why would I be asking?"
Nolan gave a slight nod, as if to say, "I understand."
"All right. But before that, I’d like to ask for your help."
"Help?"
Nolan pulled a piece of paper and a pen from his pocket.
He spent a few minutes writing before handing the paper to Sylvia.
"I want you to gather these ingredients within a week. Can you do that?"
Sylvia took the paper and glanced at it.
Her eyes widened in shock.
"W-What the hell is this? Are you insane? These are all incredibly rare ingredients!"
Nolan waved his hand dismissively.
"Take it or leave it. The choice is yours."
Sylvia fell silent. She looked over the list once more. Among the ingredients were a golden wood log, the nectar of a three-colored tulip, and a single feather from an ice bird of the Northern Continent.
And those were only a few of them. Every ingredient on the list was exceptionally rare.
Sylvia pondered for a full fifteen minutes before finally taking a deep breath and replying with a heavy heart.
"I’ll accept it!"
Nolan smiled in satisfaction.
"Good. In that case, I won’t hide my identity from you any longer."
He straightened his posture, his expression turning cold and indifferent.
"I am the Singularity of Chaos."
