Chapter 2049: Clash of Demigods (1)
’I am an Eldritch Ice Apparition.’
High Millinar Angela’s pale eyes stared crimson as she struggled.
’I was born from the depth of a Millenium Ice Mountain, devoured my kind until none remains in order to become the strongest Eldritch Ice Apparition, tempered my body—to be connected to the Dimension of the Astral, and then obtained the Law of Freezing.’
’I rose through the rank under High Lord Ursa’s family, and became known as the White Ghost.’
She gasped as her airway was squeezed shut, preventing her from breathing.
A drool drizzled down the corner of her lip as her face went pale.
’Anyone I phased would find their bodies freezing—from the inside, causing biting cold pain that could even be felt in their souls. And since only a few Demigods have access to the Dimension of the Astral, I don’t need to be afraid of a physical confrontation, though I’m weak at it.’
’But this man... he negated both my powers like they were nothing?’
High Millinar Angela couldn’t believe it.
Her glowing eyes saw through Rex’s body to feel the coldness within—and found that the freezing cold was rapidly melting, and the damage from it was instantly mended by his regeneration. Moreover, Rex could somehow catch her while she was still in her astral form.
It should be impossible, but the pain from being choked hard proved otherwise.
"V-Vlaos!" She roared through a choked throat—veins bulged around her neck from Rex’s unmerciful iron grip. "He has a Law that’s at least from the primary order at least! Something about his reach made it unavoidable."
"Law of Inevitability," Rex whispered with a nasty grin. "It did not matter where your real body was at; with this Law, I can grab you the same. Pretty neat, right? It must’ve been quite some time for someone like you to be grabbed like this."
"A-Animal! Let go!"
"No need to flail so much."
Rex squeezed even harder, and her eyes bulged, and her mouth instinctively opened, desperate for air.
And then, he brought her face closer to his.
"Don’t be scared..." He whispered menacingly, letting his words drift into her ears—as his nose picked up an acrid scent from her. A scent of fear. "I won’t kill you right now. I won’t let you die so easily. Out of these High Millinars—I wanted to savour your taste the most. I want to munch on your limbs one by one and watch you scream with that heartless tongue of yours."
High Millinar Angela felt a burning sting on her neck, but she didn’t have the time to feel it.
Her eyes caught something.
"Fear can be manipulated too, you know." She suddenly said, and the pain from her face disappeared— like it was never there. "In an all-out battle, the side that fooled the enemies better would win most of the time. And you have been fooled. Thanks for the information."
Swish—!
Like a real ghost, High Millinar Angela phased through Rex’s claws and moved away.
Even though the Law of Inevitability was still active, she was still able to slip away from his claws.
Rex’s fingers closed on nothing, and she glided away free like smoke through a sieve, retreating away.
At the same time, he snapped his gaze down, sensing the air was churning.
He blinked and focused on the power of Law—that was seething on the ocean bed. It was glowing with a menacing light and could be seen even through the dark surface of the ocean. Rex immediately made use of the System to scan it.
<Scanning...>
<Notice: the item the user is staring at is the Crux of Ocean Water Law.>
Splash—!
Just then, before Rex could wrap his head around what happened, a shadow fell over him.
He lifted his gaze and saw the five remaining water mirages of High Millinar Vlaos had already trapped him in a circle—their weapons raised and their immortal energy surged in unison. Together they cast an exalted spell, another one, while simultaneously making use of the Crux of Ocean Water Law below.
It seemed High Millinar Vlaos had been creating that Crux of Law while he was occupied.
Now, it was time to strike back.
Rex watched as the dark ocean convulsed, and a million liters tore upward in a single, rising motion, coalescing into a spherical wave that rose thousands of feet high, blotting the sky. He stood at its center, isolated and trapped in the eye of liquid storm.
Instinctively, he blasted skyward.
He charged at the hole overhead, the only way out of this catastrophe.
As long as he could reach it before the spherical wave closed, turning into a dome, he could escape the Exalted Spell, whatever it was. His muscles strained before he surged upward with one powerful leap; the golden disc helped push him up from below.
But he was too late to escape.
Like an ocean monster closing its maw shut, the spherical wave closed and collapsed inward.
SPLASH—!
Rex was struck by an overwhelming force that felt—like the full brunt of a tsunami slamming hard into his chest. Ocean water crashed down from every direction, dragging him from the sky, spinning him in its currents, and bringing him down to the ocean bed.
A massive splash erupted upward, and then Rex was gone, swallowed by the black water.
Davina saw this spectacle, but felt no worry at all.
Knowing how monstrously strong Rex was and how hard it was to kill him, she didn’t let the impressive spectacle distract her. Just like earlier, she was charging another attack, ready to create mayhem that would work to their advantage.
"Are you ready?" High Lord Rashal asked again.
"Yes." She nodded, then tilted her head up and gave a second not do Vadyn—who waited way up in the sky inside a fragment of glass panel that she created. The three High Millinars were occupied with Rex, leaving the rest to them. "On my signal!"
Boom—!
Davina shot skyward like an emerald-glazed shooting star.
Her emerald cloak trailed behind her, snapping and flapping like a banner caught in a hurricane. For a second, she had considered transforming into her complete werewolf form—the power would grant her extra raw destructive might.
But she held back.
Since the battle had only begun, draining herself too early would be a foolish mistake.
And worse, it would also pull attention onto herself, which could be fatal.
Out of the four of them, she was the only one who would avoid direct confrontation with the enemies.
She blasted more energy through her feet—hooting her even faster skyward while her body circulated both moonlight and starlight energy, refining them with the borrowed immortal energy Aylith had gifted her for the Purgation Duel.
All energies merged, twisted, and became something incredibly powerful.
For the first time, she wielded power that could harm Demigods for good.
Once she reached the appropriate height, she raised her arm up, intending to cast her Spirit Genesis.
It was the signal for Vadyn and High Lord Rashal to start their attacks.
But then, her eyes widened.
A shiver ran down her spine—as if the hand of a ghost brushed against her skin. No, it was a presence. Someone loomed behind her, intercepting what she was planning to do. She glanced over her shoulder and saw the person, High Millinar Julas.
His monstrous body was now covered in smooth, slick fish skin—with a dorsal fin protruding from his nape like a blade. Like a patient predator, he stalked from underwater, waiting for exactly this moment. For him, it was clear that Rex was soaking all their attention.
It was the plan.
So, he waited patiently for the easiest to kill to make a mistake.
High Millinar Julas couldn’t reach Vadyn in the sky, not with the glass scattered everywhere around her. He could never match High Lord Rashal alone. And he couldn’t reach Davina when High Lord Rashal was still right beside her.
But the moment she separated from him, the moment she rose alone, he struck.
"This battle is not for weaklings like you."
His fingernails elongated into claws, charged with water-like immortal energy, and he swiped.
Swoosh—!
In the nick of time—a glass panel interposed itself, slowing the arcing speed enough. Davina’s emerald cloak snapped around her like furling wings, wrapping her in emerald protection before the attack came hard onto her.
The impact still hurled her forward.
Even though she ate the strike through protection, it still knocked the wind out of her lungs.
Not even needing to look, Davina kicked and exploded energy from her feet, blasting herself skyward right on time. High Millinar Julas, determined to take her out for good, slashed again but only clawed through empty hair where her spine had been.
Davina was decisive in her moves, and that saved her from suffering brutal damage.
As she rose even higher, she quickly did what she rose to do.
"Spirit Genesis: Fest of Shooting Stars!"
Her emerald cloak shimmered, and from its folds, more than a dozen stars detached themselves from it and shot skyward. Each one burned bright and expanded with intense energy as they drank the starlight from the air around them.
For a heartbeat, they hung in the air, blazing like miniature suns.
And with a gesture from her hand, they fell.
Swoosh—!
BOOM—!
BOOM—!
A shower of shooting stars rained down on the battlefield.
Each one slammed into the red shore, targeting the two stationary High Millinars, High Lord Ursa, and Diamantona. Destructive explosions erupted in a chain with each one shaking the ground and even went as far as swallowing the area in blinding light.
Around, the impact rippled everywhere.
The dark ocean churned. The air screamed. And the stench of scorch lingered.
For a long, terrible moment, nothing could be seen but the fury of Davina’s Spirit genesis.
Taking advantage of the smoke and the ripples of power, High Lord Rashal made his move.
He blinked from one spot to another, and then emerged from the smoke—opening up a circle that caught High Lord Ursa and Diamantona off guard. Before either could move, a column of white light erupted from the ground, swallowing Diamantona whole.
Diamantona’s body and the area around him turned white, suspended in another dimension.
And then, High Lord Rashal charged straight at High Lord Ursa.
On the side, shards of glass burst from the thick smoke—and hammered the stationary High Millinar’s ice barriers in volleys. Even then, not a crack was made on the ice barriers. Not even a scratch. But that was not the purpose of the shards.
Vadyn emerged from one struck the ice barrier with a resounding clang.
She disappeared into another shard and then reappeared from another, making another strike.
Mercilessly, she attacked the ice barriers with extreme speed.
Twenty attacks in a matter of two seconds.
Oblivious to what was going on outside, on the surface of the dark ocean, bubbles rippled.
Rex tried to breathe, only to choke on ocean water.
The cold hit him first, and then the pressure as he slammed onto the ocean bed. Before he could recover, two water arrows pierced through him. Two water mirages, one with a bow and another with a crossbow, fired different angles.
The shafts cut through the water as if it were air, and slammed into his chest and stomach.
Blood bloomed in the dark.
And the predators around him smelled blood.
Just then, water currents coiled around his limbs, rotating fast enough to pin him in place.
Two more water mirages descended and seized his arms—֫holding him spread-eagled. The last hovered above, watching with cold contempt. High Millinar Vlaos was appalled that Rex thought that he could suppress them easily despite knowing they were battle-hardened.
Soon, High Millinar Angela came.
She was still in her astral form, and the water didn’t slow her at all.
Her body split into a hundred apparitions, and each one dove into Rex—phasing through his flesh, his bones, and his core. Each pass left frost in its wake—The water around him began to steam. Ice spread through his veins as the freezing assault continued.
And still, somehow, his eyes remained open.
Still, his crimson gaze burned through the dark water, refusing to dim.
