Chapter 957: Failed attempt.
Chapter 957: Failed attempt.
A figure clad in black materialized in the room, seemingly appearing from thin air. Tendrils of darkness, and shadows all around his body, slowly merging with his body. He had nothing for a face, quite literally. It was an ever present blank face. He walked towards the sleeping man in the room, his footsteps made no sound, evident that a skill was being used.
Many skills were being used, all of the darkness and shadow affinity. The man took out a black dagger from within his cloak. The dagger was imbued with chaos mana, and small bits of purple lightning escaped it’s blade. They made no sound as well.
Alan was unaware of everything, sleeping as soundly as a baby. The man raised the dagger up, and promptly brought it down on Alan’s chest, and to his dismay.
The dagger shattered like glass. If a skill wasn’t obscuring the assassin’s features, his eyes would be recoiling in horror right about now. He stepped back, ready for his target to awaken, but nothing of the sort happened. Alan was still sleeping as soundly as ever.
Slowly, the assassin regained his confidence, and approached the sleeping man once more. This time, he took out a vial of poison, one so potent it would kill an A-rank, and heavily maim an S-rank individual. Carefully, he brought it to the mouth of the sleeping man, and let it drip.
“ACHOO!”
He got a reaction, although not one he would expected. As the poison trickled down Alan’s throat, and the toxic fumes entered his nose, he coughed in response. He woke up, perfectly alright, but confused as hell.
He spotted shards of metal around his bed, and a nasty smell in the area. And then, when he looked at his room more closely, he found the assassin, embedded into the wall, encased in ice with a slight green tint.
“…Uh.”
He stood up, and examined the intruder, before sighing, finding out he was dead.
“…Sorry?”
The reason Alan had remained asleep was simple, for not a single moment had his senses, those of a God Beast, mind you, ever detected any danger from the man. Not his weapons, skills, items, or individual power. Alan had merely been awoken from a minor disturbance.
The poison simply smelled like shit. Alan scratched his head, as he approached the man embedded in the ice. By his will, it broke apart, revealing his head, and Alan stabbed his fingers right in. Three magic circles appeared, each one more complicated than the other as his eyes began to glow.
Not from the use of Dragon eyes, but rather from another spell. One in the domain of dark magic, capable of scrying information from corpses. Shortly afterwards, Alan knew who the man was, and who sent him, which honestly surprised him a little.
He had thought Daniel was behind this, merely testing Alan, but the man had no involvement. The assassin was rather sent from Sacramento, the city of the mafia. One of the big bosses had sent him here, which confused Alan.
He thought about it for a while, but then again, almost nobody believed he was really SSS-rank, or maybe the news had not reached Sacramento yet, though highly unlikely. Before he could contemplate the motives of the man further, the door to his room opened, and Alexander stepped in.
The moment he saw the room, he stopped in his tracks. Not from the odd mana in the room, nor the dead man embedded in the wall, or even the strange, dangerous shards of metal carrying ominous mana.
But the fact that Alan was butt-naked.
“…Since when do you sleep naked?”
“Since when do I do what?”
Alexander raised his brows, and looked down once more, finding Alan’s lower body properly dressed this time. He shook his head…
“Hey, you can’t blame me, this world is too hot! The air conditioner isn’t doing shit!”
“Anyways, what happened here?”
“Some mafia boss from Sacramento sent this guy, gave him a good dagger and poison too, although, bad matchup honestly. Really bad.”
Even if the dagger had pierced his skin, his own dark and shadow mana would overwhelm the dagger, rendering it useless. And if the poison was actually potent enough to do something, his bloodline would have reacted. The assassin was dead the moment he took the contract, and nothing he had would have saved him if Alan woke up in a slightly bad mood.
At least in this way, his death was swift and painless.
Alexander looked at the dead man for a moment, before shaking his head. He said.
“I have something I need to talk to you about.”
Alan turned his head from the corpse to Alexander, clearly interested.
“What is it?”
Alexander took a deep breath, and explained the issue about his affinity. Alan simply listened silently, offering a nod or two here or there. In the end, he shrugged his shoulders.
“Honestly, not much I can say. It’s an affinity I’ve never heard about as well. Although, I don’t really think it’s that much of an issue, you could always stop using it. Or build tolerance to it, like everyone else. Hasn’t been a while since you actively used it in battle?
You use Lightning and Wind more now, don’t you? Though…”
Alan sighed, and assured Alexander.
“I guess I can ask Valus about it.”
With that, he sent a mental command to the Supreme Being, unsure of whether Valus would answer or not. Alan knew the dragon knew something about it, but was unaware if he would actually bother with it.
Alexander took a seat as he waited, while Alan remained where he was, checking the body of the intruder. He asked.
“Did anything weird happen?”
“I had to leave my date with Olivia…”
“Bummer.”
Thankfully, to save Alexander from the embarrassment, The Supreme Being eventually responded, much to Alan’s surprise, he hadn’t expected a response so soon.
Wasn’t Valus always busy with so much stuff?
