Chapter 922: My Exo-Knight
Chapter 922: My Exo-Knight
I reached the place that the staff member told me was the correct place to pick up the order.
There was already someone at the entrance waiting, a rather petite sized girl who was even smaller than Ries in size, dressed in overalls and a hard hat looking a little panicked.
She immediately perked up when she saw me and rushed over towards me.
"You are Lady Tera, right?!"
"I’m not a noble so there’s no need for the ’Lady’. You can relax."
The girl let out a sigh of relief before she straightened herself.
"Ahem... Right! You are Miss Tera, right? I was told that you would come pick up your order! Right this way!"
The woman hopped towards the entrance of what looked like a warehouse or a storage facility of sorts with me following behind her.
The place seemed like a private hangar where the company stored their Exo-Knights.
There were rows upon rows of those Exo-Knights with various engineers in the midst of giving them touch ups before their final delivery to their buyers.
Aside from me, there were also a few other people who were also there to collect their machines and they were watching the engineers go through a final inspection for them.
For some reason, quite a number of people turned to watch me walk past them which made me think that news of what happened at the store somehow made its way here.
The fact that some of the staff were whispering to each other while pointing in my direction pretty much confirmed it.
I followed the petite woman to the back of the Exo-Knight hangar where a rather large security door separated whatever was behind from the main area of the hangar.
The woman went up to the security panel at the side and pressed her palm against the console.
The console let out a beep before the massive doors started to cycle open, a mechanical voice speaking out from hidden speakers.
"Welcome back, Head Engineer Shen."
Oh... So this girl is the head engineer of this branch I guess.
No wonder the news spread... Having their branch’s head engineer guide someone around must be something that’s a pretty big deal for them and they probably went out of their way to find out why.
The two of us watched the doors slowly slide open a crack just big enough for us to walk through before she skipped over to the opening, prompting me to follow suit.
As the doors continued to slide open, the lights in this part of the hangar blinked on and I was treated to the sight of five Exo-Knights to my left and right and a single white Exo-Knight with black accents directly in front of me at the end of the hall.
The machine resembled the figure of a woman with a slim waist and wide hips and chest. The digitigrade legs had relatively thick thighs before they thinned out past the knees to form the feet that were triangular and looked like the suit had built in heels.
The armour plates around the legs look like it’s segmented. In fact, pretty much all of the armour plates on the machine looks segmented so I assume this machine was built for speed instead of strength.
My gaze moved up to its torso that was compact and streamlined, which was then flared out at the shoulders where two humanoid arms rest by its side.
The head that was mounted on its neck was small compared to the rest of the frame with two antennas jutting out at the sides of the head near the crown. What looked like a mechanical halo was attached to said antennas which made it look like some kind of angel.
That was further complimented by the fact that there were wings jutting out from behind it, though these were all mechanical in nature and not feathered wings. And even though I said wings, they were just two triangular shaped attachments with segmented pieces on it which made them look like wings even though I don’t know what their purpose was... Yet.
Attached to the left hip was something that resembled a sword sheathe but the sheathe was too circular and thin to house a sword so it looked more like some kind of baton or something. And on its other hip was what looked like a giant building sided assault rifle except the barrel was as big as ship sized main cannons.
Even in its powered down state, it looked like I had just came across some kind of sleeping titan that was waiting to be awakened.
The other five Exo-Knights also looked magnificent in their own ways but all my attention was drawn to the white Exo-Knight.
Even without asking, I knew instinctively that this was the one for me.
Renata seemed to agree as well since I could feel her vibrating in excitement when she saw it.
Either that or... It’s because she spotted a standard model Exo-Knight in another corner of the room which was meant as material for her to absorb so she could churn out some mass produced Exo-Knights as backup for us if needed.
But well... I only had eyes for the titan that was in front of me.
I was so lost in looking at it that I didn’t realise the girl was speaking to me until I heard a hesitant voice from the side calling out to me.
"Umm... Miss Tera? Is... Umm... Is everything alright?"
I blinked and turned to her before nodding slowly, "Yes... Can I try it out?"
The woman let out a sigh of relief for some reason before nodding her head enthusiastically, "Of course! Please, right this way!"
She led me towards the white Exo-Knight and we boarded the lift to head to the cockpit that rested in its chest.
For some reason, the girl does not get off the lift to walk the bridge over with me.
When I turned to raise an eyebrow at her, she hesitated, "Umm... I was instructed not to get close to any of the cockpits, Miss Tera. I mean... Everyone had the instruction not to do so... Apparently only the pilots and you can approach them."
Ah... I think it’s because they would be able to see what kind of cockpit it was and figure out that the pilot was a Psionic based on the cockpit design.
Makes sense.
I nodded at her and she took the elevator back down towards the ground while I stepped up to the cockpit which opened up automatically when I got close.
Climbing inside, I found a single chair with two orbs on the armrest and what looked like some kind of crown resting on top of the headrest which jutted out directly where my head would be.
I took a seat on the chair and the entire cockpit came to life when I rested my hands on the orbs.
The crown then lowered itself onto my head and I felt a sudden jolt of electricity spark through my body and my vision went black for a moment before I suddenly found myself looking at something that wasn’t the cockpit while also looking at the cockpit.
It’s like my left eye was looking at one thing while my right eye was looking at something that was completely different.
Things started to shift around me and it felt like I was moving my body after waking up from a really long nap.
I felt my body straighten itself, my arms flexing, my armour plates sliding into their place, my shoulders rolling back, my power core pulsing in my back, my wings unfurling slightly and the halo above my head detaching from the antenna to float up above my head before it lit up in an ethereal blue glow.
I let out what could have been a breath as air blew out from my exhausts, feeling power and strength coursing through every inch of my body.
I paused, needing just a moment more to realise that I was looking through the eyes of the Exo-Knight itself. Everything I was feeling was coming from the Exo-Knight as well.
It was a little weird to be seeing through my own eyes as well since I could see my body and my arms resting on the armrest. But I knew instinctively that if I were to try and move my arms, I would move the Exo-Knight’s arms instead.
I then tried to see if I could just focus my attention on the vision I was seeing from the Exo-Knight and I found the vision from my own body fading away until I was looking through my Exo-Knight’s head, making me feel like I was the actual titan itself.
I slowly raised up my hands, the machine responding to my desires immediately and the two arms of the Exo-Knight raised themselves smoothly, my fingers flexing easily as I commanded them to.
It did not feel like I was a machine at all.
Damn... Rosalia, Freiderike... Both of you are real geniuses...
