Worthless Profession: Dragon Tamer

Chapter 1194, Crisis in the Dragon Domain

Lu Fan had been on the fence as to whether he ought to reveal his identity as a Dragon Tamer.

After all, the relationship between Dragon Tamers and Giant Dragons was meant to be one of mutual benefit. Given that it was a Profession tied to Giant Dragons, they ought to feel a certain level of ‘friendliness’ towards him.

But when he thought about it some more, he ultimately abandoned the notion.

Thinking back to every occasion he had revealed his Dragon Tamer identity before a Giant Dragon, there had not been a single time it had earned him anything resembling a warm reception.

It seemed that in their eyes, Dragon Tamers were not friends at all. Rather, they were beings that had no right to stand in the same breath as them, yet had plastered gold on their own face and dared to presume they could subjugate them.

So, to avoid unnecessary complications, Lu Fan suppressed the impulse to declare himself a Dragon Tamer, and simply followed Ouyang Bai Ge’s lead. They stated that they were not merely Humans, and moreover were Ancient Gods.

These Giant Dragons had no knowledge of what Ancient Gods were, but the oppressive weight that Lu Fan and his companions radiated had earned their acknowledgement.

As for possessing Human bodies, that was not particularly remarkable. Any Giant Dragon that had ventured outside the Dragon Domain would know that in the wider world, Humans were the most widespread of all beings. No matter what manner of existence one was, everything fell into the category of a Monster in the broader sense.

Humans alone possessed Attribute Panels. They were viewed as Players, distinct from every other living creature under the sky.

In fact, many Divine Beings had taken to condensing Forms closely resembling that of Humans, seeking to understand why the Human body held such peculiar wonders, and whether it might offer some means of breaking through one’s own shackles.

Even within the Dragon Domain, it was said that Dragon Kings had chosen to take on Humanoid Forms in order to more effectively break through their own limits.

The Devouring Dragon King, who had long travelled alongside Lu Fan, did so as well.

It was not the Devouring Dragon King alone who thinks this way. Quite a few other Giant Dragons held the same idea.

So as long as Lu Fan and his companions were not pure Humans, but merely held Human Forms while being, in their true nature, beings whose strength far surpassed Humanity, they could still earn a Giant Dragon’s respect.

This spared Lu Fan and his companions a ton of unnecessary trouble.

Combined with the presence of the Flame Dragon and Two Headed Dragon as fellow Dragons, and the fact that Lu Fan’s group had moreover declared themselves to be here specifically to eliminate the entity devouring everything within the Valley of Life, the Bronze Dragon and Jade Dragon’s attitude towards Lu Fan and his companions was reasonably cordial.

Even so, Lu Fan noticed that they were this far from the Valley of Life, and Giant Dragons were already stationed here on watch, to prevent uninformed Giants Dragons from wandering into danger and losing their lives.

That indicated the situation within the Dragon Domain was perhaps not as manageable as he had hoped.

Since Lu Fan’s group had declared themselves to be here to eliminate the Desolate Ancient God, the Bronze Dragon was naturally delighted. It offered to escort the entire party directly to the front line of the battle against the Desolate Ancient God.

And so, led by the two Dragons, the entire group flew together in the direction of the Valley of Life.

Along the way, Lu Fan asked the two Dragons what exactly had happened within the Dragon Domain, and whether the Desolate Ancient God had truly grown powerful enough that even Giant Dragons could not cope with it.

*Haaa…*

Both the Bronze Dragon and the Jade Dragon let out a long breath at the mention of it, and began to recount what had transpired, informing the group of everything that had occurred during this time.

Some time ago, a crisis had suddenly broken out within the Dragon Domain, and this crisis had not originated from the Valley of Life.

The situation within the Valley of Life was known to very few Giant Dragons. The source of the crisis was, rather, two Dragon Clans in the vicinity of the Valley of Life who had come to blows with one another.

These two Clans were the Light Dragon Clan and the Darkness Dragon Clan. The former excelled in Light Element Skills, while the latter specialised in Dark Element Skills, and owing to the nature of their respective species, the environments each preferred were entirely different.

Although the two Clans had lived in relatively close proximity, they had held one another in mutual wariness, their strengths roughly equal, and so the two Clans had coexisted peacefully enough through the years.

Some time prior, however, the Light Dragon Clan suddenly discovered that the waters of their Radiant River, which they had invested enormous effort in cultivating, had been tainted by Dark Elemental Energy.

Originally, the waters flowing through that river had been suffused with the Light Element. The Light Dragon Clan depended upon that river for both their survival and the growth of their numbers.

Now that Dark Elemental Energy had contaminated the waters, several Young Dragons fell ill.

This sent the Light Dragon Clan into a furious rage. The only clan in the vicinity capable of wielding Dark Elemental Dragon Language Skills was the Darkness Dragon Clan.

And so, the Light Dragon Clan concluded without doubt that the Darkness Dragon Clan was behind this act of sabotage, and turned out in full force to confront them.

Under such circumstances, a battle was all but inevitable.

Giant Dragons were hot-tempered by nature, after all. The Light Dragon Clan’s survival was under threat. The Darkness Dragon Clan had been confronted at their very door with accusations and abuse, entirely unprovoked. How could either side be expected to sit down calmly and discuss the matter, tracing the affair to its origins and uncovering the truth?

*Crash!*

And so, the two Clans fell into battle before long, and casualties mounted on both sides.

Neither side noticed, however, that at the edges of the battlefield, in places they could not see, patches of rotting mud kept appearing, swallowing those Giant Dragons too injured to move, completely erasing their presence.

By the time both Clans realised that many of their wounded had mysteriously vanished, it was already too late.

Waves of rotting mud surged forth, nearly consuming every last Giant Dragon of both Clans in one sweep. The Head of each Clan barely escaped with a handful of survivors, and finally understood that the battle between their Clans had been orchestrated and engineered by some other entity.

But the rotting mud had by then taken on a momentum of its own. Pouring out of the Valley of Life, it consumed vast swathes of the Dragon Domain, piece by piece. Many smaller Clans fell victim to this unprovoked catastrophe and perished within it.

The Heads of the two Clans realised the situation had begun to slip beyond their control. They went immediately to the Shadow Dragon King of the Dragon Domain to address the matter, lest the strange entity spread to other parts of the Dragon Domain and render it no more.

Within the Dragon Domain, there were in total nine Dragon Kings. The Life Dragon King and the Shadow Dragon King were both among them.

Between the two, however, the Shadow Dragon King’s power far exceeded that of the Life Dragon King by a considerable margin.

The Life Dragon King was, after all, a Support Specialised Dragon, whereas the Shadow Dragon King was Combat Specialised.

Lu Fan’s own Ye Sha was of the Shadow Dragon Clan and simply imagining what a fully mature Shadow Dragon King might be capable of gave Lu Fan a chill.

The Shadow Dragon King held enormous prestige within the Dragon Domain. After coming to assess the situation, the Shadow Dragon King concluded that this was indeed a catastrophe for the Dragon Domain.

If it could not be properly addressed, the Dragon Domain would be in real danger. After all, this rotting mud was pouring out of the Valley of Life, which made it clear that the Life Dragon King had already met with misfortune.

If even one of the nine Dragon Kings had their fate unknown, that alone was enough to convey just how fearsome this thing truly was.
