Chapter 742: War
Chapter 742: Chapter 742: War
Yet despite all of his efforts, Ivy seemed to have completely lost her will to live. It was as though she had already abandoned herself.
Her eyes were empty. Her expression was vacant. Nothing seemed capable of reaching her anymore.
Seeing this, Jade finally made a difficult decision. He told her the truth. Everything.
He told her how Silas had originally been destined to live.
He confessed how his own father, driven by greed, had killed what should never have been killed.
He even admitted something that had haunted him for years. The research base that had discovered Ivy’s location. The lead that ultimately put her in danger.
He had been the one who helped provide that information.
At that time, he had never realized that Ivy and the person being dreamt of were the same individual.
As he confessed everything, guilt filled his eyes. However, Ivy remained completely numb.
She felt neither love nor hatred toward him. She simply felt empty. It was as though her heart had died long ago.
Seeing her condition, Jade suddenly grabbed her shoulders. “But you need to understand something.”
His voice became urgent. “Every single one of my actions was influenced.”
He clenched his teeth. “All along, there were superior beings manipulating events.”
His eyes burned with frustration. “They wanted everyone around you to die.”
Ivy slowly turned her head toward him.
Jade continued. “Do you still want to die after knowing that?”
His voice shook.
“Your parents, your boyfriend, and your loved ones. They died because someone wanted your life to become a living nightmare.”
Ivy’s empty eyes shifted slightly. “What do you mean?”
Jade’s fists tightened. Veins bulged across his hands. “You still do not understand.”
His voice was filled with hatred.
“They did it intentionally. They wanted to break you. They wanted you to suffer. They wanted you to die from grief.”
His breathing became ragged. “And they succeeded.”
Then Jade delivered the final blow.
“Right now, those people are celebrating.”
A dangerous coldness entered his voice. “They are celebrating your suffering. They are celebrating your defeat.”
Something changed inside Ivy.
The emptiness in her eyes trembled.
For the first time in a long while, a spark appeared.
From that day onward, she slowly began recovering.
She still carried her pain. She still carried her grief. However, she had finally found a reason to move forward.
She wanted to avenge her loved one, and when she was done… she would die.
At that moment, the present-day Ivy suddenly opened her eyes.
Her entire body was trembling. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
The memories felt so real that her chest physically hurt. Taking several shaky breaths, she wiped her eyes.
Then she stood up, opened the door, and stepped outside. There, she saw Silas. The moment she saw him, her eyes turned red.
Without warning, she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around him.
Silas was caught completely off guard. However, the instant he felt her trembling body, concern filled his expression.
Without hesitation, he hugged her back. His embrace was firm. As though he wanted to assure her that he was truly there.
Feeling his warmth, Ivy buried her face against his chest.
Silas gently stroked her hair. His voice was filled with concern. “Are you okay, love?”
He tightened his embrace slightly. “What happened?”
He lowered his head and kissed the top of her hair. “Did you have a nightmare?”
Ivy shook her head. Her arms unconsciously tightened around Silas.
A faint tremble ran through her body. “I’m grateful.”
Her voice was barely above a whisper. “I’m truly grateful.”
Silas looked confused, but he did not pull away.
Instead, he gently rubbed her back.
Meanwhile, Jade had arrived to discuss battle strategies.
The moment he stepped into the area and witnessed the scene before him, his footsteps paused.
A complicated expression flashed across his face. Without saying anything, he quietly looked away.
When Ivy noticed Jade’s presence, her eyes flickered slightly. She slowly released Silas and walked toward Jade.
“I want to talk to you.”
Jade raised his head. “Come with me.”
For a brief second, hesitation appeared on Jade’s face. Eventually, he nodded. “Alright.”
Nearby, Silas frowned. Something about the interaction bothered him.
Although he trusted Ivy completely, he could not deny the uncomfortable feeling growing inside his chest.
Still, he chose not to interfere. He simply watched them leave.
Soon, Ivy and Jade arrived at a secluded location away from everyone else.
Eventually, Ivy broke the silence. “Do you remember your past life, too?”
Jade remained quiet. Then he slowly shook his head. Seeing that, Ivy secretly released a breath she did not realize she had been holding.
However, Jade spoke again. “I do not remember my past life directly.”
His gaze lowered slightly. “But my past self told me everything.”
A bitter smile appeared on his face. “Ivy…”
There was genuine regret in his voice. “I just want to apologize.”
He clenched his fists. “For everything you suffered.”
Hearing those words, Ivy remained silent. She neither accepted nor rejected the apology.
After several moments, Jade let out a self-deprecating laugh. “I guess I do not deserve forgiveness.”
His eyes carried visible guilt. “I cannot change the past. But I promise that one day I will make up for it.”
Ivy frowned. “What does that mean?”
However, before she could receive an answer, Jade turned around.
His expression had become unusually determined.
Without looking back, he simply walked away.
Watching his retreating figure, Ivy felt slightly confused. Still, she did not dwell on it for long.
She turned and walked in the opposite direction.
Even though she had seen fragments of her previous life, one thing remained certain.
No matter how events unfolded, she would never have ended up with Jade.
Not in the past. Not in the present. And certainly not in the future. She did not hate him anymore.
However, she had no intention of becoming close to him either.
Soon, the thirtieth day arrived. The day humanity had feared finally came.
The war officially began.
