Chapter 784: Jackson
Chapter 784: Chapter 784: Jackson
Knock… knock… A deep, familiar voice immediately came from inside. “Come in.”
Danielle slowly pushed the door open. Dragging her feet unwillingly, she stepped inside before quietly asking, “Yes, sir? What can I do for you?”
Although she was speaking to him, her eyes never once lifted from the floor. She simply stared at the polished tiles beneath her shoes.
Seeing that, Asher couldn’t help chuckling. “What color clothes am I wearing?”
Hearing the sudden question, Danielle instinctively looked up.
The moment her eyes landed on him, she saw the familiar green military uniform fitted perfectly around his tall figure.
His posture was straight, his shoulders broad, and the neatly ironed uniform somehow made his already cold appearance look even more imposing.
“You… You’re wearing your green uniform.”
Asher’s smile immediately widened. “Oh? So you finally decided to look at me.”
Only then did Danielle realize she had fallen straight into his trap. A faint blush slowly spread across her cheeks. She immediately lowered her gaze again.
“Sir, you don’t have to beat around the bush like this. You’re making me feel guilty for no reason.”
In reality, she had subconsciously been avoiding looking at him this entire time. Seeing her flustered appearance, Asher laughed even harder.
He casually clapped his hands once before standing up from behind his desk. Thanks to inheriting most of his father’s features, Asher naturally carried a rather cold appearance.
Normally, his sharp eyebrows and indifferent expression made him seem distant and unapproachable.
However, the moment he smiled, it was as though winter snow had suddenly melted beneath the warmth of spring sunlight.
His entire demeanor changed. Instead of appearing cold, he looked surprisingly approachable. Playful. Even a little mischievous. For a brief moment… Danielle became completely dazed.
She simply stared at him without blinking. Then, she suddenly heard him ask,
“So, do I look handsome?”
Without even thinking, the answer escaped her lips. “Yes. You’re very handsome.”
The moment the words left her mouth, her eyes instantly widened. ‘Oh no… What did I just say?!’
When Asher witnessed her adorable reaction, he couldn’t stop himself from laughing. “If you admire me that much… then just say it openly. There isn’t any reason to hide it.”
He continued approaching her leisurely. “In fact… if you have any opinion… you should say it out loud. For example…”
He pointed at himself with complete confidence. “Sir, you’re incredibly handsome.”
Then he grinned. “Sir, I like you.”
As he continued walking toward her, Danielle immediately backed away. “Stop!”
She pointed at him nervously. “Stop! Stop! Don’t you dare continue saying those cheesy lines!”
Her face had already become completely red. Before Asher could say another word, she hurriedly reached the office door. Turning around, she shouted,
“Sir! You seriously need to stop watching those fictional romance dramas!”
Without waiting for his response, she immediately opened the door and bolted out of the office. Bang!
The office door closed behind her. Inside, Asher stood frozen. His smile gradually stiffened.
‘Wait… How did she know? I was literally reenacting the confession scene from that romance drama I watched yesterday. Did she watch the same drama?’
Meanwhile… Danielle leaned against the wall outside, covering her burning face with both hands.
Her heartbeat was racing wildly. ‘Thank goodness… I managed to escape.’
However, the reason she had deliberately mentioned romance dramas wasn’t because she had actually recognized the scene.
She had another purpose.
‘If Asher thinks I misunderstood him… Then he’ll naturally assume I’m harboring feelings for him. If he believes that, then… someone like him would definitely think I’m unworthy of him. Once that happens, he should stop bothering me altogether.’
Thinking she had come up with a perfect plan, Danielle happily returned to her own office. She had barely sat down when, her phone suddenly began vibrating across the desk.
Letting out another sigh, she picked it up. “Hello?”
A strangely familiar male voice came from the other end. “Hello. Am I speaking with Miss Danielle?”
Danielle immediately frowned. Her instincts told her something was wrong. “Who are you?”
The man calmly answered, “I’m Jackson. I’m standing outside. Come out.”
The moment she heard his name, her brows tightly knitted together. “Jackson… I don’t understand. What exactly are you doing here?”
Before she could reject him, Jackson hurriedly interrupted. “Danielle.”
His tone became unusually serious. “Before you decide not to meet me, let me tell you something. I have one of your mother’s relics.”
The moment those words reached Danielle’s ears, she abruptly stood up. The chair behind her scraped loudly against the floor.
“You bastard! How dare you?!”
However, Jackson only laughed. “If you want it, come outside. Otherwise… I’ll throw it straight into the river.”
Hearing those words, Danielle’s expression changed completely. “Don’t move! I’m coming right now!”
Without waiting for another response, she hung up and rushed outside as quickly as she could.
The warm afternoon breeze brushed across her face as she exited the building.
Standing not too far away, she immediately spotted Jackson. Just like Mason…he possessed a tall physique. However, unlike his eldest brother, Jackson was undeniably much more handsome.
His facial features were sharper, and he naturally carried a refined aura that easily attracted attention.
Long ago, when Danielle had first begun understanding what it meant to like someone… Jackson had been the very first person she had ever admired.
She had even secretly considered confessing her feelings to him. After all, back then, he had always treated her gently. He smiled at her, protected her, comforted her whenever she felt lonely.
She had genuinely believed he was different. That illusion remained intact until the day she accidentally overheard his conversation.
She could still remember every single word.
“Danielle? She’s nothing more than a burden. Once I’ve slept with her, I’ll throw her away. Everything I’ve done until now has only been bait.”
That single conversation had shattered every illusion she once held. Heartbroken, she had foolishly turned toward his eldest brother instead.
She had believed that perhaps Mason was different. Perhaps… the eldest brother would possess a kinder heart. How laughable.
In the end, she had failed just as miserably. Only then had Danielle truly understood one thing.
People rotten to their very core could never be changed. No matter how patiently someone tried to guide them, they would never become better people.
At most, they would simply learn to hide their true nature behind charming smiles and sweet words.
Deep inside, their minds remained just as filthy as before. Pulling herself out of those unpleasant memories, Danielle looked directly at Jackson.
“Give me my mother’s relic.”
Jackson smiled leisurely. “You know… You’ve become much more beautiful than before. I honestly don’t understand. Why did you choose my eldest brother?”
He slowly stepped closer. “How about this? Start dating me instead. I’ll give you far more than some old relic. I can give you gold bars. I can even arrange a position much higher than the one you’re holding now.”
Danielle’s expression remained completely cold. “I don’t care what you think. Just give me back my mother’s relic.”
Jackson sighed dramatically.
“Danielle… It would be much better if you simply submitted. If you insist on resisting… then I’ll have no choice but to use my influence.”
His voice turned frighteningly calm. “I can have you removed from the army. Do you really want that?”
For a brief second, Danielle’s body stiffened. Then she immediately answered, “You can’t. I have powerful people backing me too.”
However, the next moment… Confusion appeared on her face. She narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
“But, how do you have enough influence to remove me from the army?”
Jackson smiled proudly. After all, he had entered the military much earlier than Danielle. During those extra months, he had worked tirelessly to climb through the ranks.
Unlike Mason, Jackson wasn’t particularly talented. His abilities were average.
However, he possessed something far more dangerous. Patience and calculation. And an exceptional talent for manipulating people.
Those qualities had allowed him to steadily rise to a respectable position. It was also because of that influence that he had secretly allowed Mason’s parents, who were also his own parents, to enter the base and deliberately cause trouble for Danielle.
Everything had been part of his carefully calculated plan.
Jackson’s motive was incredibly simple. Using this opportunity, he intended to marry Danielle. It wasn’t because he loved her.
Far from it, Jackson had never truly liked Danielle. Instead, he still couldn’t forget the humiliation she had caused him.
