Chapter 785: Misunderstanding
Chapter 785: Chapter 785: Misunderstanding
She had escaped on the very night he had planned to make her his. She had made him lose face. That alone was enough for him to hold a grudge.
His plan had always been straightforward. First, marry Danielle. Then, after the marriage, he would slowly humiliate her, break her spirit, and make her regret rejecting him.
Only then would his wounded pride finally be satisfied. Yet… who would’ve thought that Danielle would become such a difficult nut to crack?
No matter how many times he approached her, she never gave him even the slightest opportunity.
‘Does she really think she’s some kind of fairy? How dare she reject someone as handsome as me?’
The more he thought about it, the more irritated he became. Suppressing his annoyance, he put on what he believed was his most charming smile.
“That’s a secret.”
“Fine then, just hand me over my mother’s relic!” Danielle frowned harder.
“Oh, that? I don’t have it. I was lying to you.” He smiled, causing Danielle to become angry.
“You…”
He slowly extended his hand toward Danielle. “Baby… Why are you acting so cold?”
However, before his fingers could even touch her… Smack! Danielle slapped his hand away without the slightest hesitation.
Her beautiful eyes instantly turned icy. “If you dare come any closer, then just wait. I’ll report you immediately. And you’ll have no choice but to run away with your tail between your legs.”
The confidence in her voice wasn’t fake. Jackson immediately froze. A trace of uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
‘She’s far too confident… is she really bluffing?’
Just then, a calm voice suddenly echoed from behind. “What’s going on here?”
Both Danielle and Jackson instinctively turned around. A familiar figure was slowly walking toward them. It was Asher.
The moment Jackson recognized him, very trace of confidence disappeared from his face. His complexion instantly turned pale.
Under his breath, he unconsciously muttered, “He’s back…”
Meanwhile, Asher calmly walked over to Danielle. His sharp eyes briefly swept over Jackson before stopping on Danielle’s slightly tense expression.
His brows subtly furrowed. “Is this man bothering you?”
Danielle instinctively shook her head. “No… It’s not like that.”
She wanted to explain everything properly. However, before she could finish speaking. Jackson hurriedly interrupted with an awkward laugh. “No, no.”
He smiled politely. “I’m Danielle’s old friend. We’ve known each other since childhood. I only came to see how she was doing. That’s all.”
He then turned toward Danielle and smiled. “Now that I’ve seen you’re doing well, I’ll be leaving.”
Without waiting for anyone’s response, he quickly walked away. His departing figure almost looked hurried.
Asher silently watched Jackson disappear into the distance. A slight frown appeared on his handsome face.
He had observed their interaction from afar. Something about it didn’t sit well with him. He hadn’t been able to clearly see Danielle’s expression.
However, he had seen Jackson’s. That man had definitely looked interested in Danielle. An unpleasant thought suddenly surfaced inside Asher’s mind.
‘Could it be… Danielle rejected me because of that man?’
The more he thought about it, the darker his mood became. Meanwhile, Danielle opened her mouth. “Sir…”
She wanted to explain Jackson’s identity. However, before she could say anything, Asher coldly interrupted. “Why are you slacking off?”
His voice suddenly became stern. “Or do you want me to deduct your bonus?”
Danielle stared at him blankly. “What? How can you be so unreasonable?”
Instead of calming down, Asher only became even colder. “Oh? I can be much more unreasonable than this.”
He folded his arms. “Now go back and finish your work.”
His gaze remained indifferent. “If you don’t complete everything today, then don’t even think about leaving.”
Without another word, he turned around and walked away. Leaving Danielle standing there in complete bewilderment.
Watching his departing figure, she couldn’t help mumbling under her breath, “What a strange person. I thought he was actually kind.”
She let out a long sigh. “I almost thanked him. Thank goodness I didn’t.”
With that, she quietly returned to her office. By the time Danielle finally completed all of her work, night had already fallen.
The moon hung high above the silent military base, casting a pale silver glow across the empty roads.
After finishing the last document, she stretched her stiff shoulders before leaving the barracks.
As she slowly walked home, her thoughts continuously wandered back to everything that had happened earlier.
‘Should I report Jackson? If I don’t… he might continue bothering me. Maybe I should tell Asher everything after all.’
Lost in thought, she eventually arrived outside her apartment. She reached into her pocket, took out her keys, and was just about to unlock the door when a strange feeling suddenly crawled across her back.
It felt as though someone was silently watching her. Danielle immediately turned around.
Not far behind her, an elderly man stood quietly beneath the dim streetlight. He appeared to be in his late sixties.
His back remained perfectly straight despite his age.
Judging from the neatly pressed military uniform and the countless medals decorating his chest…
It was obvious he held an important position within the military. However, the way he was looking at Danielle made her extremely uncomfortable.
His eyes slowly swept across her from head to toe. That gaze, it wasn’t admiration. Nor was it respect.
It was the kind of gaze that made goosebumps rise across her skin. Suppressing the discomfort in her heart, Danielle politely asked,
“Sir, do you need something?”
The old man smiled faintly. “Young lady. You seem exceptionally talented. It just so happens that I’m also from the military.”
He deliberately adjusted his uniform, making the medals on his chest gleam beneath the light. “I’ve heard quite a lot about your outstanding performance.”
His smile gradually widened. “So, I was wondering whether you’d like to have a private discussion with me.”
While saying those words, he subtly displayed the rows of medals across his chest. It was an unspoken warning.
He wanted Danielle to understand one thing. Rejecting him, meant rejecting someone with considerable authority.
After all, she was merely a newcomer. Although she was an exceptionally talented recruit, to someone of Patrick’s status, suppressing her career would be as easy as crushing an ant.
Danielle silently looked at him. Then, her expression turned completely indifferent. “Sir.”
Her tone remained polite. “Please leave. If you continue standing here for even one more second… I’ll report you for workplace harassment.”
She calmly continued, “Our departments are completely unrelated. Yet you’re asking me to have a private conversation this late at night.”
She took one step backward. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d suspect you had ulterior motives.”
The moment those words fell, Patrick’s face darkened instantly. The smile disappeared completely.
His expression twisted with anger.
“You… Young lady… You…”
However… Danielle didn’t bother listening any further.
She simply gave him one last indifferent glance before turning around. She unlocked her apartment door, stepped inside, and immediately locked it securely behind her.
Click. Only after hearing the lock engage did she finally let out a shaky breath. She leaned against the door. “It’s alright… he’ll leave. He wouldn’t dare openly harass me.”
Unfortunately, she was wrong. Patrick indeed dared. He simply wasn’t foolish enough to do it openly.
Throughout his entire career, he had always preferred soft manipulation over direct violence. If he openly harassed a subordinate, word would spread throughout the military.
Once that happened, everything he had painstakingly built over decades could collapse overnight. He couldn’t allow that to happen.
Standing outside the apartment building, Patrick slowly narrowed his eyes. “Just wait. You may feel proud today, but one day, you’ll definitely regret what you’ve done.”
After throwing those words into the cold night air, he finally turned around and left.
Inside the apartment, Danielle quietly sighed in relief after sensing his presence disappear.
Meanwhile, the next morning, Ivy finally returned to the base. The moment she stepped through the entrance, two familiar figures rushed toward her. “Sweetheart!”
Helena hurried over first. Victor followed closely behind. The two of them immediately surrounded Ivy, anxiously checking every part of her body.
Helena carefully held Ivy’s face. She examined her arms. Victor wasn’t any calmer. He repeatedly asked,
“Are you hurt anywhere? Did anyone bully you? Did you eat properly?”
Only after confirming that Ivy was perfectly safe did the couple finally breathe a sigh of relief.
However, that relief quickly transformed into anger. Helena’s eyes instantly became red. She tightly grabbed Ivy’s shoulders.
“Ivy! If you wanted to leave, then you should’ve at least told us!”
Tears gradually welled up in her eyes. “Do you know how worried we were?”
Her voice cracked. “We searched everywhere for you. We couldn’t sleep. We couldn’t eat.”
She gently shook Ivy’s shoulders.
“So tell me. Why did you leave without saying a single word?”
Her expression suddenly became unusually firm.
“And if you don’t answer me properly this time, then forget about leaving this base ever again!”
