Later, Ember took a deep breath and looked toward him.
“If you truly have a butterfly like that constantly roaming around you, then perhaps I should just lock you up. I already earn plenty of money as a landlord. I do not need you to work for me just so you can earn more.”
Hearing those words, Jay sighed.
His fingers brushed against the documents still tucked inside his pocket.
‘If I reveal this opportunity right now, things will only become more complicated.’
Therefore, he decided not to mention the research team yet.
Instead, he looked at Ember seriously.
“Research is my dream and my passion. If I stop doing it, I will no longer be the person I am today.”
Hearing those words, Ember sighed.
“You truly know exactly how to push my buttons.”
She shook her head helplessly.
“All right, then. Continue with your research. But if that Perry shows up again, I will genuinely slap her, and you will not be able to protect her from me.”
Jay laughed.
“Do you honestly think I have even the slightest feeling for that woman? If I truly did, I would probably become a three-legged dog in my next life.”
Jay thought that was the end of the matter and that it would no longer come between him and Ember.
However, everything changed just five days later.
Ember marched toward him with an angry expression and shouted the moment she reached him.
“Jay, how dare you? You truly have grown wings, haven’t you?”
Jay was stunned by her sudden outburst. “What is going on?”
Ember let out an angry laugh before throwing several documents directly at his face.
Jay froze.
This was the first time Ember had ever reacted to him in such a manner. He quickly picked up the documents, and the moment he went through them, his expression changed.
He immediately stood up and looked at Ember. “You cannot possibly believe these documents, can you?”
Ember laughed bitterly.
“You practically said yes to that research group and even told the dean that you would consider it. How am I supposed to trust you after seeing this? It looks as though you were lying to me all along.”
She stared at him with reddened eyes. “Jay, tell me the truth. Are you really involved with that Perry?”
She took a shaky breath before continuing. “If you are, then let us get divorced. I am not prepared to live with a man who has already betrayed me.”
Jay finally panicked.
He immediately put the documents aside and stepped toward her.
The documents stated that Jay had a chance to join an advanced research group, and the only researcher currently listed alongside him was Perry.
To someone looking at the documents without knowing the truth, the situation could easily appear suspicious.
It seemed even worse because Jay had not told Ember about the opportunity.
What infuriated Ember the most, however, was the photograph attached to the documents.
In the photograph, Jay and Perry were standing extremely close together, and the angle made it look as though the two of them were embracing.
The moment Ember saw it, she felt as though her entire world had collapsed around her.
Her chest tightened, her fingers trembled, and anger burned through the hurt in her eyes.
Jay, on the other hand, immediately cursed Perry in his mind. ‘That damn woman.’
He did not even need to investigate to know that Perry was behind this.
He had already seen how persistently she hovered around him, and now she had apparently gone even further. ‘Once I calm Ember down, I will deal with her personally.’
However, Ember was determined not to let the matter go. She turned toward Jay with a cold expression.
“Since you think Perry is so good, then leave with her.”
She immediately began gathering his clothes.
Jay’s eyes widened. “Ember, wait. Let me explain what actually happened.”
Ember ignored him.
“Ember, listen to me. There is nothing between Perry and me.”
She continued stuffing his clothes into a bag without even looking at him.
“Please, Ember, just give me a chance to explain.”
She still refused to respond.
As for their child, the baby was currently being raised at their grandparents’ house.
From the moment Jay had realized that Ember was becoming increasingly insecure, he had already arranged for their child to stay with the grandparents so that he could spend more time alone with Ember.
Yet, despite all his efforts, he had somehow still ended up in this situation.
When Ember finally threw his clothes and bag outside the apartment, Jay stared at them in disbelief.
He took a deep breath, picked up the bag, and placed it neatly outside the apartment door.
He did not take it away. He had no intention of leaving.
If necessary, he would sleep on the floor outside the apartment, or he would somehow find a way to sleep inside.
There was no possibility of him simply walking away.
However, before dealing with Ember again, he needed to deal with the person who had caused this mess.
With that thought, Jay marched straight toward the dean’s office.
He entered without knocking, threw the documents onto the desk, and stared at the dean with an icy expression.
“You had better investigate this thoroughly. Otherwise, I will have no choice but to involve my sister-in-law in this entire matter.”
His voice became colder.
“Remember this. If she has the power to give you the position you currently hold, then she also has the power to take that position away from you.”
Before this newly appointed dean had taken the position, Jay himself had been offered the opportunity to become the director.
However, Jay had deliberately refused.
He wanted to achieve everything through his own abilities.
He did not want to look back one day and realize that every position and achievement he possessed had simply been handed to him.
More importantly, if his sister-in-law ever behaved improperly, he would have no grounds to stand against her in front of Ember and defend his wife.
Therefore, Jay had gritted his teeth and chosen the harder path.
Who could have imagined that the newly recruited dean would eventually turn out to be such a troublesome person?
Now, Jay seriously suspected that the dean had some kind of ulterior motive.
The dean looked at Jay.
He was only about twenty years older than Jay, yet the authority in his position had made him accustomed to being respected.
“I truly do not know who sent these documents. I will investigate the matter and give you an answer.”
Jay laughed.
The response sounded so formal and perfunctory that it reminded him of the meaningless messages banks used to send before the apocalypse.
He shook his head.
“You truly know how to sugarcoat your words. Just say directly that you are planning to hide the mastermind behind this.”
The dean’s expression tightened.
“Are you planning all of this because you want to make sure that I never take over the position of dean? If that is the case, then you have chosen the wrong target.”
Jay leaned forward slightly.
“You know what? Before this, I did not want to become the dean. But now, I will contact my sister-in-law and take this position myself.”
The dean’s expression finally changed. He immediately stood up.
“Jay, you cannot accuse me of such things without evidence. How can you rashly make these accusations?”
His voice became defensive.
“Now I seriously suspect that something is going on between you and Perry. Otherwise, why would you drag me into this matter?”
Jay laughed coldly.
“I already told you to warn Perry, and yet she went ahead and did this. I seriously suspect that you have a motive to ruin my marriage because you want to make sure that I never make a comeback.”
The dean looked away. “If you truly think that way, then go ahead.”
Jay noticed the subtle movement immediately. He gave a cold snort before turning around and walking away.
He did not need to ask anything else.
The dean’s decision to avoid his gaze had already given him more of an answer than words ever could.
Meanwhile, the moment Jay left, the dean clenched his fists tightly.
His jaw tightened as he grabbed his communication device and made a call.
The moment the connection was established, he shouted, “Come here immediately.”
Not long afterward, the door opened.
Perry walked inside with a faint smile on her face.
She chuckled softly. “What happened? Why are you suddenly acting so cold toward me?”
The dean, Ronald, glared at her.
“Did you forget what I asked you to do? I told you to be discreet, but you have been far too open about everything.”
